Liberty freshman infielder Amber Bishop has been named a Top 25 finalist for the 2017 Schutt Sports/NFCA Division I National Freshman of the Year.

On May 11, the Top 10 Finalists will be announced, while the field will be narrowed to the top three on May 24. The 2017 Schutt Sports/NFCA National Freshman of the Year will be announced on May 30.

Bishop, a native of Murrieta, Calif., is the first Lady Flame to be named a finalist for National Freshman of the Year. She has batted .367 while leading the team with 36 runs (tied), 58 hits, nine home runs and 47 RBI. Bishop has tied the program freshman record for home runs, while setting a new Liberty freshman standard in RBI.

She ranks 16th nationally, and fourth among all NCAA Division I freshmen, in RBI. Her 58 hits rank 19th overall in the nation, and ties for third among Division I freshmen. For the season, she has posted 18 multiple-hit games, including six three-hit contests. She got at least one hit in each of her first eight collegiate games.

Season highlights include a two-homer, six RBI game at Charleston Southern, on March 17 and a two-out, game-winning home run at Campbell on April 2. She was named Big South Player of the Week on Feb. 13, while twice receiving Big South Freshman of the Week honors.

Liberty played against two past National Freshman of the Year winners this season, in Auburn's Kasey Cooper (2014) and Florida's Amanda Lorenz (2016).

The Lady Flames (32-17, 13-2) will play in a Big South series at Winthrop, Friday and Saturday. Liberty enters the weekend with a two-game lead over Campbell for the top spot in Big South standings.
