Darrel Jones was named Big South Men's Field Athlete of the Week for the fifth time in his career.
Liberty junior Darrel Jones has been recognized as the Big South Men's Outdoor Field Athlete of the Week, thanks to his performance at the Liberty Collegiate Invitational.
Jones triple jumped a season-best 50-9.5 at his home facility on Saturday, earning his second Big South weekly honor of 2017 and the fifth of his career. The native of Monroe, N.Y., placed second in the event, including first among collegiate entrants.
Jones, whose series of six attempts also included a 50-5.5 leap, tops the 2017 Big South performance list by two and a half feet. He has likely punched his ticket to the 2017 NCAA Division I East Preliminary Round meet, as Jones currently ranks No. 18 in the East Region and No. 34 nationally for the men's triple jump.
Jones will focus on the long jump at Saturday's Gamecock Invitational. The one-day meet will begin at 9 a.m. at the brand-new Sheila & Morris Cregger Track in Columbia, S.C.
