Ola Makurat won her first career Big South Freshman of the Week award on Monday.
Liberty guard/forward Ola Makurat has been named the Come Ready Nutrition Big South Women's Basketball Freshman of the Week for the final week of the 2016-17 regular season.
Coupled with teammate Keyen Green's honors, Liberty players have now won nine Big South Women's Basketball Freshman of the Week awards this year, including five in a row to close out the regular season. This is the first time that multiple Lady Flames have been named Big South Freshman of the Week during the same season since 2009-10 (Jelena Antic and LaKendra Washington).
A native of Sierakowice, Poland, Makurat led the Lady Flames with 12.5 ppg during last week's pair of games. She tallied a career-high and game-high 19 points against UNC Asheville on Monday, while tying her career high with three triples.
Makurat then contributed six points to Saturday's 57-47 win over Campbell, including four tallies during the Lady Flames' game-ending 15-2 run.
Makurat's performances continued a late-season surge, which has seen her average 10.6 ppg and 7.4 rpg over the last five games. For the year, Makurat ranks third among Big South freshmen in rebounding (5.1 rpg) and sixth in scoring (6.8 ppg).
No. 4 seed Liberty (13-16) will face No. 5 seed Charleston Southern (17-12) in a quarterfinal matchup of the 2017 Big South Women's Basketball Championship Friday at 2 p.m. inside the Vines Center. If they Lady Flames win, they will move on to a semifinal contest Saturday at 2 p.m. The championship game is slated for Sunday at 4 p.m.
