Golf Completes Busy Stretch at Cleveland Golf Palmetto Intercollegiate

Cleveland Golf Palmetto Intercollegiate Live Stats

No. 36 Liberty wraps up a busy stretch of golf early next week when the Flames participate in the 2017 Cleveland Golf Palmetto Intercollegiate in Aiken, S.C.

Following next week's event, the Flames will have played four tournaments over a five-week span after opening their spring schedule on Feb. 6.

The Flames' next stop will be a 54-hole event host by Division II powerhouse USC Aiken at the Palmetto Golf Club (par 70, 6,671 yards) on Monday and Tuesday.

Despite playing without the services of scoring leader Mickey DeMorat (71.00 fall scoring average) the last several weeks, Liberty has posted a pair of top five finishes and maintained its top 40 national ranking during the busy run of events.

The two-day event will be played at the famed Palmetto Golf Club, which is considered the fourth oldest golf course in the country. The course was founded in 1892 by Thomas Hitchcock, who started with four holes where the course's current practice range and No. 16, 17 and 18 holes currently stand. The course was expanded to 18 holes in 1895 and has held tournaments that were won by golfing legends Ben Hogan and Byron Nelson.

Liberty will be one of four top 50 ranked teams in this year's 17-team field. The Flames are joined by No. 3 Virginia, No. 16 Clemson and No. 39 South Carolina. Tournament host USC Aiken is currently ranked No. 18 in the latest Golfstat Division II national rankings.

The event is a familiar one for the Flames, who have participated in this tournament for the last eight years. Liberty has finished top five in this tournament five times during the eight-year run, with the last coming with a fifth-place showing in 2013.

Last year, Liberty finished the event in ninth place, carding a 30-over par 870 (299-282-289). The Flames' top golfer in the field was DeMorat, who finished in 15th place with a 3-over par 213 (73-73-67) thanks to a solid closing round.

In DeMorat's absence from Liberty's lineup this spring, the Flames have been led by Gabe Lench and Isaiah Logue, who both hold a 71.76 stroke average this season.

Logue finished in 29th place at last year's Cleveland Golf Palmetto event, posting an 8-over par 218 (71-72-75). This season, the junior has posted four top 10 finishes with his last coming at the Sea Best Invitational (Feb. 6-7), where he finished tied for fifth place with a 2-under par 208 (71-67-70).

Lench has matched Logue with four top 10 showings this season. The sophomore finished one shot ahead of Logue at the Sea Best Invite for fourth place, tying his best tournament finish of the season. At last year's Cleveland Golf Palmetto, Lench finished tied for 62nd place with a 15-over par 225 (79-71-75).

Kieran Vincent, the lone freshman in Liberty's starting five this spring, ranks fourth on Liberty's roster with a 72.44 season stroke average. The rookie led the Flames at their last event, finishing in 14th place at The Hayt with a 3-over par 219 (72-72-75).

Tournament play gets underway on Monday morning with 36 holes of continuous play scheduled for the first day's event. The final 18 holes of play is set for Tuesday.
