No. 33 Liberty will complete its three-tournament swing through the state of Florida this weekend when they participate in The Hayt, Friday through Sunday.
Liberty, currently ranked No. 33 in the latest Golfstat national rankings, opened the spring portion of its tournament slate with a third-place showing at the Sea Best Invitational (TPS Sawgrass – Dye's Valley Course/Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla.) and a ninth-place finish at the SunTrust Gator Invitational (Mark Bostick Golf Course/Gainesville, Fla.) earlier this month.
The three-day, 54-hole event returns to the Sawgrass Country Club (par 72, 6,976 yards) for the event's 26th installment. The tournament, hosted by North Florida, is named in honor of John Hayt, a longtime supporter of the UNF golf program and a local Jacksonville area businessman.
More than half of this year's tournament field is currently ranked inside the latest Golfstat top 75 national rankings: Jacksonville (No. 31), Liberty (No. 33), North Florida (No. 36), UCLA (No. 45), UCF (No. 49), Tennessee (No. 62), North Texas (No. 65) and Louisville (No. 75).
The Flames will be returning to the event for the second year in a row and the third time in the last four seasons.
Last year, Liberty finished tied for ninth place, carding a 33-over par 897 (305-302-290) after playing its best golf during the tournament's final day. In 2014, the Flames finished in 12th place with a 26-over par 890 (297-298-295).
Four of the Flames' golfers slated to tee it up for head coach Jeff Thomas this weekend also participated at last year's The Hayt. Isaiah Logue paced the team, finishing tied for 27th place with a 7-over par 223 (75-76-72).
Logue is one of three Flames who currently hold a sub-par season scoring average. The junior ranks third on the team in scoring average (71.41) and is tied for second with four top-10 showings this year.
Gabe Lench has also recorded four top-10 finishing during his sophomore season and ranks second on Liberty's roster in scoring average (71.32). Last year, Lench finished The Hayt in 35th place with a 9-over par 225 (80-76-69), closing with one of six sub-70 rounds during his rookie campaign.
Also returning for a second season in a row at the Sawgrass Country Club for Liberty are Payton Taylor (T47 +12/228) and Hutson Chandler (T51 +13/229). Chandler (73.92) and Taylor (74.21) rank fifth and sixth, respectively, on Liberty's roster in terms of scoring average.
The new face to Liberty's starting five this weekend at The Hayt is freshman Kieran Vincent, who ranks fourth on the roster with a 72.36 season stroke average.
Tournament play gets underway tomorrow morning at 8:30 a.m., with Liberty going off the No. 1 tee (par 4, 390 Yards) along with golfers from Jacksonville and Army.
