February 16 was more than just one of the most exciting days in history of the Liberty University Athletics Department, it was the realization of a dream started in 1971.
Last Thursday, Liberty announced the NCAA approved its waiver to begin the Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) reclassification process. The waiver allows Liberty to start the process without meeting the requirement to receive an invitation to join a FBS conference.
Liberty will compete as a FCS independent program during the 2017 season. The following season, Liberty will be a FBS independent program and be eligible to compete in bowl games starting in 2019 once the reclassification process is complete.
The dream of playing Division I football at the highest level began when Dr. Jerry Falwell, Sr., opened the doors to then Lynchburg Baptist College in the fall of 1971. During the next 40-plus years, Liberty transformed from a small Bible college to the largest Christian University in the entire world.
Today's LFSN Game On feature details the journey of Liberty's first football team in 1973 to the recent announcement that will allow for the fulfillment of Dr. Falwell's vision, Liberty competing at the highest level of NCAA competition for each of its athletics programs.
