As the Liberty swimming & diving team prepares for the 2017 CCSA Swimming & Diving Championships, LFSN reporter Alan York had a chance to interview Head Coach Jake Shellenberger.
The Lady Flames enter the conference championship meet in search of its second CCSA title, and first since 2014.
Florida Gulf Coast won its second CCSA title in a row in 2016, and seventh in the last eight years, scoring a conference meet-record 1,670 points. Liberty totaled a program-record 1,358 points, posting its fourth second-place finish in the last five years. Judging from the CCSA top times lists this season, it appears that FGCU and Liberty will battle it out for first place once again.
The Lady Flames went 10-2 in dual-meet action this season, including 5-1 against CCSA opponents. This is Liberty's sixth winning season in a row, and fourth 10-win campaign in the last six years.
Shellenberger is a two-time CCSA Women's Swimming Coach of the Year, receiving the award in 2012 and 2014. He has posted a 73-28 dual-meet record, leading the Lady Flames since the beginning of the program.
The Lady Flames' current roster features four past CCSA medalists, as Alicia Finnigan, Rachel Hoeve, Prudence Rooker and Victoria Tschoke all recorded top-three finishes last year.
The 2017 CCSA Swimming & Diving Championships will be held this Wednesday through Saturday at the Gabrielsen Natatorium in Athens, Ga.
