Matchup with JMU to Jumpstart Spring Slate for Golf

The spring portion of Liberty's 2016-17 men's golf schedule will start one week earlier with a head-to-head matchup against James Madison on Sunday.

Liberty was originally scheduled to begin its spring slate of events on Feb. 6-7 at the Sea Best Invitational on the TPC Sawgrass – Valley Course in Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla.

The Flames will now square off against No. 58 James Madison for 36 holes of play to jumpstart their spring. The two top 75 programs will play at the Deer Creek Course at The Landings Club in Savannah, Ga., on Sunday.

Liberty finished top five in all five of its 2016 fall events, highlighted by a second-place finish at Duke's Rod Myers Invitational. Liberty's top-five finishes helped the Flames end the fall season ranked No. 32 in the final Golfstat rankings of the calendar year.

The Flames finished the fall season with a 283.07 stroke average, shattering the program's previous fall stroke average record of 290.75 set in 2010.

Four of Liberty's starting five golfers finished the fall posting sub-par scoring averages: Mickey DeMorat (71.00), Isaiah Logue (71.29), Gabe Lench (71.50) and Kieran Vincent (71.57).

Following the head-to-head matchup against James Madison, the Flames will begin their seven tournament spring schedule at the previously mentioned Sea Best Invitational.

Liberty will finish its spring tournament schedule at the 2017 Big South Men's Golf Championship at The Patriot Golf Club in Ninety Six, S.C., on April 21-23. The Flames are the defending Big South champions following their 12-stroke victory over Charleston Southern, last April.

Liberty has won the Big South men's golf title four out of the last six seasons (2011, 2012, 2014 and 2016) and advanced to NCAA Regional play five out of the last six years (2011-14 and 2016).
