Liberty's Dontae Duff (56), Frankie Hickson (23) and Juwan Wells (54) have been named to the 2016 VaSID University Division All-State Football Team.
Liberty's Dontae Duff, Frankie Hickson and Juwan Wells have been named to the 2016 VaSID University Division All-State Football Team. The team was announced earlier today by the Virginia Sports Information Directors (VaSID).
Wells was a first-team honoree on the defensive line. Duff and Hickson garnered second-team accolades at offensive line and return specialist, respectively.
Earlier this month, both Duff and Wells were named to the inaugural HERO Sports All-America teams. Duff was named to the HERO Sports FCS Freshman All-America team, while Wells was selected to the HERO Sports FCS Sophomore All-America squad.
Duff earned All-Big South second-team honors in 2016, starting all 11 games as a part of Liberty's offensive line. The native of Mesquite, Texas, graded out as Liberty's top offensive lineman this season.
He led the team in knockdowns and allowed 2.0 sacks, ranking second on the team. The redshirt freshman started at three different positions last season (center, right guard and left guard).
Hickson had an immediate impact on Liberty's special teams during his redshirt freshman season, earning All-Big South second-team honors. He ranked second in the Big South and No. 20 in the country, averaging 25.3 yards per kickoff return in 2016.
The native of Lynchburg, Va., set a school record with a 99-yard return for a touchdown against Kennesaw State. He finished the year with 707 total kickoff return yards, the second most in program history. The running back also finished his rookie season at Liberty with 94 carries, 450 rushing yards and four touchdowns.
Wells had a breakout season for the Flames, leading the team with a career-best 79 tackles. He ranked third in the Big South in total tackles and finished the season fifth in the Big South in tackles for a loss (11.0) and fourth in sacks (5.5).
The 2016 All-Big South first-team honoree has recorded 18.5 tackles for a loss and 10.5 sacks during his first two years at Liberty. The native of Dublin, Ga., also finished this past season with a team-best nine pass breakups and posted four double-digit tackle efforts.
James Madison and Virginia Tech dominated the all-state teams following their championship seasons. After claiming the program's second FCS national championship, James Madison had 15 players named to the all-state teams. Following its ACC Coastal Division title, Virginia Tech has 13 selections to the all-state teams.
Virginia had six players named to the all-state listings, followed by Old Dominion (5) and Richmond (4). Liberty and William & Mary had a trio of honorees, while VMI has two selections and one award winner from Norfolk State.
