Liberty men's tennis 2017-18 signee Sebastian Mermersky had an impressive run at the USTA National Winter Championships, Dec. 27 through Jan. 2 in Scottsdale, Ariz. Mermersky won five matches and advanced to the semifinals in the Boys' 18 Singles division.

Mermersky knocked off high-caliber opponents along the way to the semifinals. In his first match, he defeated Daniel Pellerito, 6-3, 6-2. In the round of 64, Mermersky topped Justice Jones in straight sets, 6-3, 6-4.

The Washington, D.C., native continued his strong play in the round of 32 by defeating Clemson commit Beau Pelletier, 6-2, 6-2. Mermersky won his round of 16 match in two sets, 6-1, 7-5, over Penn '18 commit Jake Sands.

In the quarterfinals, he defeated current Indiana freshman player Bennett Crane in three sets, 6-3, 6-7 (4), 6-2. Robert Maciag bested Mermersky in the semifinals, 6-4, 6-4.

"Finishing in the last four of a USTA Super National event is a big deal," said Liberty Head Men's Tennis Coach Chris Johnson. "Sebastian continues to have an outstanding year. We are looking forward to seeing his progress heading into the fall tournament season!"
