A quartet of Liberty field hockey players was recognized by being named to the Virginia Sports Information Directors (VaSID) University Division All-State teams on Wednesday.
Liberty freshman goalkeeper Allison Schaefer was selected as the VaSID Co-Rookie of the Year. Senior defender Serena Barr garnered first team All-State distinction, while senior midfielder Bethany Barr and freshman midfielder Agueda Moroni were named second team All-State.
Schaefer garnered Co-Rookie of the Year selection alongside Virginia defender Dominique van Slooten. The Millersville, Pa., native put together an outstanding first season in a Liberty uniform, compiling a program record 124 saves. Schaefer finished the year No. 11 in the country in saves per game (6.89) and No. 13 in save percentage (.747). She recorded two shutouts and four efforts of 10 or more saves.
Serena Barr, who was honored as a 2016 Longstreth/NFHCA Division I Second Team All-American last Wednesday, makes her fourth and final appearance on a VaSID postseason team. Barr was a first team selection in 2013 and 2014 and a second team selection in 2015. The Lurgan, Northern Ireland, native totaled eight goals, 11 assists (0.67/game-ninth in nation) and a team-best 27 points this fall for the Lady Flames. She finished her four-year career at Liberty as the program's leader in assists (38), fourth in goals (29), third in points (96) and fifth in game-winning goals (6).
Bethany Barr makes her second appearance on a VaSID All-State team after being named to the second team in 2015. As a senior, Barr tallied six goals, a team-best 12 assists and two-game winning markers. Her 12 assists matched a program single-season record that she set as a freshman in 2013. Barr ended her Lady Flames four-year career among the program leaders in several categories, including goals (26, fifth), assists (35, second) and points (87, fifth).
Moroni, who garnered selection to the NFHCA All-South Region second team, led Liberty in goals with 10, notched three assists, and finished with 23 points in her freshman season. Late in the season, the Cordoba, Argentina, native was awarded BIG EAST Offensive Player of the Week and Freshman of the Week honors in consecutive weeks (Oct. 24, Oct. 31).
