2016 Men's Tennis Fall Season Recap

With the fall season wrapped up for the Liberty men's tennis team, LFSN's Nick Pierce had a chance to reflect on the fall campaign with Liberty Head Men's Tennis Coach Chris Johnson.

The young Flames squad, comprised of one junior, four sophomores and three freshmen, competed at seven tournaments this fall and experienced a good deal of success. Liberty opens its spring schedule at home against King and Bluefield State on Jan. 28.

2016 Fall Season Highlights

  • The Liberty doubles team of Diego Castano and Alex Poynter won the Black doubles flight at the N.C. State Invite. They went 6-1 as a unit this fall.
  • Freshman Vince Salas captured a title at B1 singles, while sophomore Max Borcuti reached the championship match at D2 singles at the Wake Forest Invitational to close out the fall.
  • Salas picked up a win at the Tulsa Saint Francis Health System ITA Men's All-American Championships in Tulsa, Okla. The Angeles, Philippines, native posted a .667 winning percentage (8-4) in singles this fall.
  • Freshman Chase Burton became the first Flame since Shea Thomas in 2013 to advance to the round of 16 at the ITA Atlantic Regional at Virginia Tech.
  • Sophomores Eddie Gutierrez and Ryker Heller captured a title in the Black doubles flight at the season-opening USC Upstate Fall Classic, Sept. 9-11.
