Liberty Head Lacrosse Coach Kelly Nangle has announced Melanie Via and Faith Wells as team captains for the 2017 season.
Via, a redshirt senior, competed in four contests in 2015 as a sophomore. She started all 18 contests for the Lady Flames in 2016 and was named Big South Conference Honorable Mention. Via is a sport management major.
"When I was named one of the captains for this season, I was absolutely honored! I felt so much love and support from my teammates as well as my coaches. However, I also realized that I was given a huge responsibility as well as a big opportunity to lead this team athletically, emotionally and spiritually," Via said. "To me, being a captain means that I have the responsibility to be fully and selflessly committed to every aspect of the team. Through leading by example and setting the tone every day, I plan to lead this team to become champions, both on and off the field."
Wells, a redshirt junior, competed in five contests a sophomore in 2015. She did not play in 2016 due to injury. Wells is majoring in elementary education and minoring in coaching.
"I'm just here to help my team in whatever way I can, but it's a huge honor to be chosen by the people you love the most and have so much respect for," Wells said. "I'm looking forward to seeing us compete this year! This is a really great group that is motivated to put Liberty lacrosse on the map."
Liberty opens its 2017 campaign at Notre Dame on Feb. 10.
