The Game The Liberty men's basketball team welcomes VCU to the Vines Center for the first time in over 20 years, as the Flames host the Rams on Tuesday at 8 p.m. Tuesday's game will be the second contest in a Vines Center doubleheader, as the Liberty women's basketball team hosts James Madison at 5 p.m.
Liberty and VCU both bring 1-0 records into Tuesday's matchup, as the Flames downed Cairn, 81-53, on Friday night and the Rams defeated Big South opponent UNC Asheville, 80-65, Friday in Richmond, Va.
Matchup Notes • VCU leads the all-time series, 6-1, including an 85-57 victory in the Siegel Center on Dec. 27, 2015. Ryan Kemrite led all players with 17 points, while John Dawson scored 14 points in his third game as a Flame. • Liberty defeated VCU in its last visit to the Vines Center, Dec. 2, 1995, when the Flames downed the Rams, 86-71, in the Vines Center. Big South Hall of Famer Peter Aluma led the Flames with 20 points and 11 rebounds.
Quick Notes • Liberty won its season opener for the fourth year in a row. The Flames are now 24-21 all-time in season openers, and 22-5 when their first contest is at home. • 2016 Big South Coach of the Year Ritchie McKay coached in his 100th game as head coach for Liberty on Friday. With a 53-47 record, he has the second-most wins of any Liberty head men's basketball coach through his first 100 games. • The Flames were picked to finish second in the 2016-17 Big South Preseason Men's Basketball Poll. It is Liberty's highest preseason position since being predicted to finish second in the 2003-04 preseason poll. • John Dawson was named to the Big South Preseason Men's Basketball first team, the first Flame on the first team of the preseason all-conference team since Jesse Sanders in 2011.

The two teams have split two all-time meetings in the Vines Center, as VCU defeated Liberty, 93-68, Dec. 4, 1993. • The Rams downed Liberty last season, posting an 85-57 victory in the Siegel Center on Dec. 27, 2015.
