Liberty enjoyed a successful day at the 2016 Big South Cross Country Championships, Friday at Asheville Christian Academy in Swannanoa, N.C. The Lady Flames won their first Big South title since 2012, while the Flames earned their third straight Big South runner-up finish.

Liberty edged two-time defending champion High Point, 38-45, for its ninth Big South women's cross country team championship. The Lady Flames won with an impressive team performance, placing eight runners in the top 18.

On the men's side, Liberty lost to Campbell by a slim six-point margin (31-37) in the tightest men's team finish at the Big South meet since 1995. The Flames have now placed either first or second at the Big South Championship for 14 consecutive years.

Notable
The women's team championship marked Brant Tolsma's 100th conference title during his 31 years at Liberty, including 90 Big South crowns, seven Mason-Dixon titles and three IC4A championships.

Tolsma is now a 63-time Big South Coach of the Year.

Kat Bouton became the Lady Flames' first Big South Scholar-Athlete of the Year since Jennifer Klugh in 2010.

Stanley Langat posted the best Big South finish by a Liberty men's cross country freshman since Josh McDougal won the 2004 individual title.

Langat was the Flames' first Big South Freshman of the Year since Ngetich Kipchirchir in 2012.

Josh Showalter became the 13th Liberty men's cross country runner ever to win three All-Big South honors during his career.
