Van Noord and Farrell Garner Major Big South Awards

Holly Van Noord was named the 2016 Big South Defensive Player of the Year, while Gabrielle Farrell was named the 2016 Big South Freshman of the Year.

Holly Van Noord was named the 2016 Big South Defensive Player of the Year, while Gabrielle Farrell was named the 2016 Big South Freshman of the Year.

Liberty goalkeeper Holly Van Noord was selected the Big South Defensive Player of the Year and forward Gabrielle Farrell was named the Big South Freshman of the Year, as the Big South women's soccer awards were announced this morning by the conference office.

Van Noord and Farrell were joined by three other Lady Flames on the Big South All-Conference team, as voted upon by the Big South women's soccer head coaches. Van Noord and Farrell were joined by midfielder Isabella Habuda on the first team, while forward Jennifer Knoebel and defender Sami Santos were named to the second team.

In addition, Van Noord was selected to the All-Academic team, while Sierra Lam joins Farrell on the All-Freshman team.

Van Noord receives her second Big South Defensive Player of the Year honor. The redshirt senior was also named the conference's Defensive Player of the Year in 2014.

In addition with her selection to the Big South All-Conference first team, the goalkeeper has now been named all-conference each of her four seasons at Liberty. Van Noord was also selected to the first team in 2014 and to the second in 2013 and 2015.

The 2016 Preseason Defensive Player of the Year, the redshirt senior leads the conference with a 0.80 goals-against average and .866 save percentage. She enters the weekend second in the conference in shutouts with seven, and has not allowed a goal over her last 482:01 of play.

On Sept. 4 of this year, Van Noord broke the Big South Conference record by recording her 34th career shutout with a 1-0 blanking of James Madison. The Hudsonville, Mich., native has continued to add to her conference and Liberty record, completing the Big South regular season with 40.

The team captain has been selected the Big South Defensive Player of the Week twice, Sept. 6 and Oct. 24. She also is the Liberty program leader with a 0.80 career goals-against average.

Farrell becomes the first Lady Flame to be named the Big South Freshman of the Year since Summer Able was selected as the conference's Co-Rookie of the Year in 1994.

Also named to the Big South first team, Farrell is tied for the conference lead by averaging 1.25 points per game, this season. She is also tied for third in the conference and leads Liberty in goals (seven), assists (six) and points (20).

A three-time Big South Freshman of the Week this season, Farrell is tied for the Big South lead in game-winning goals with five. The Langhorne, Pa., native also has scored five goals in conference matches to lead the Big South.

The forward will enter the weekend second on Liberty's all-time freshman scoring list. Only Lauren Coffey in 1999 scored more (32 points).

Habuda earns a first team selection in her first season at Liberty. The midfielder is tied with Farrell for the Liberty lead and tied for third in the Big South with seven goals. The Belle River, Ontario, Canada native is also seventh in the conference with 17 points.

With her second team honor, forward Knoebel receives her second straight all-conference team selection. She was named to the Big South All-Conference first team in 2015.

For the third consecutive year, Knoebel has posted a double-digit point total.  Currently, the forward has scored four goals and assisted on five others for 13 points on the season. The Warrenton, Va., native is tied for the conference lead in assists in Big South only games and is tied for fourth overall.

Santos garners her first all-conference honor. The defender in one of only two Lady Flames to start all 18 of the team's matches in 2016. She has scored a goal and has two assists, while helping Liberty record eight shutouts, this season.

The Tom River, N.J., native has been part of a Lady Flames' defensive unit that has held its opponents to a 0.89 goals-against average in 2016.

Lam joined Farrell on the Big South All-Freshman team. Lam has seen action in all 18 Liberty contests, this season. She has three assists.

No. 2 seed Liberty (11-7, 7-2) will host No. 7 UNC Asheville in a 2016 Big South Quarterfinal match, Sunday at Osborne Stadium.  Match time is scheduled for 2 p.m.
