Liberty No. 2 Seed for the Big South Women's Soccer Championship

The defending Big South Champion Liberty Lady Flames will be the No. 2 seed for the 2016 Big South Women's Soccer Championship. The conference announced the seedings and pairings with the close of the conference's regular season earlier this evening. The tournament begins on Friday, while Liberty will host a quarterfinal matchup with No. 7 seed UNC Asheville on Sunday.

Liberty captured its fifth Big South women's soccer title with a 1-0 victory over Campbell in the 2015 Big South Women's Championship title match at Bryan Park, last season.

The Lady Flames, who completed their regular season today with a 2-0 win over Charleston Southern, finished Big South play with a 7-2 record and compiled 21 points to finish in second place in the league standings. High Point finished atop the conference with a 7-1-1 record and 22 points to claim the No. 1 seed.

Liberty, 11-7 overall, enters the tournament having registered five consecutive shutouts, tying a school record. The No. 2 seed Lady Flames will host No. 7 seed UNC Asheville in the Big South quarterfinals at Osborne Stadium, Sunday afternoon at 2 p.m. The Bulldogs, 8-11 overall, completed Big South action with a 3-6 mark and nine points.

The winner of the contest advances to play the winner of No. 3 seed Campbell and No.6 seed Radford in the second semifinal game on Nov. 4 at Bryan Park in Greensboro, N.C.

This past Saturday, Liberty defeated Asheville, 2-0, at Osborne Stadium in their regular season meeting. Forward Gabrielle Farrell, Liberty's leading scorer, netted her seventh goal of the season and goalkeeper Holly Van Noord had seven saves in the Lady Flames' victory.

Campbell and Gardner-Webb each finished with identical 6-3 conference records. The Camels earned the No. 3 seed as a result of a head-to-head tiebreaker. Each of the top four seeds will host a quarterfinal-round match this weekend.

Longwood grabbed the No. 5 seed with a 5-3-1 record and 16 points, while Radford finished sixth with a 5-4 mark and 15 points. UNC Asheville (3-6, nine points) and No. 8 seed Charleston Southern (2-6-1, seven points) round out the field.

The 2016 Big South Women's Soccer Championship quarterfinals will be played at campus sites this weekend, before moving to Bryan Park in Greensboro, N.C. for the semifinals and final on Nov. 4 and 6.
