The Liberty Lady Flames tied a program record with their fifth consecutive shutout, downing the Charleston Southern Buccaneers, 2-0, to complete their regular season, Tuesday at CSU Soccer Field.
With their fifth straight shutout and their eighth of the season, the Lady Flames tie the 2009 and 2013 squads for the most consecutive shutouts in program history. Liberty has not allowed a goal over its last 493:57 minutes of play.
Liberty moves to 7-2 in Big South action and 11-7 overall. Charleston Southern falls to 2-6-1 in conference play and 6-10-1 overall.
Both Liberty goals came in the second half. Midfielder Lauren Weygandt scored her second goal of the year, and forward Devon Jones netted her fifth goal of the season, a career-high, in the contest.
Last week's Big South Defensive Player of the Week, Liberty goalkeeper Holly Van Noord made three saves to register her seventh blank sheet of the season and extend her Big South and Liberty career record to 40.
Neither team was able to score during the opening 45 minutes. Liberty controlled play for the majority of the half, outshooting Charleston Southern, 8-3, and holding the edge in corner kicks, 3-0.
Both of Van Noord's two saves came early in the first half. The goalkeeper turned away a shot by Kelsey Fitzhugh during the second minute and another by Fitzhugh during the 10th minute.
Liberty forced two saves by Buccaneers goalkeeper Liz Amanda Brown during the half. During the 34th minute, the Charleston Southern goalkeeper stopped a shot off the foot of Lady Flames' midfielder Caroline Boone. Later, Brown made a save of a shot by Liberty forward Erika Troutman during the 37th minute.
The Lady Flames struck for the match's first goal just over six minutes into the second half. A pass by Liberty forward Jennifer Knoebel deflected off CSU keeper Brown at the top of the 18-yard box towards the left goalpost. There, Weygandt scored to give the visitors a 1-0 advantage at 51:02.
Liberty extended its lead during the 75th minute. Midfielder Sami Santos sent a crossing pass from the right sideline to the far post. The ball rebounded off the left post to Jones, who put it in the net for what proved to be the final score of 2-0.
The Lady Flames allowed only one Buccaneers' shot attempt over the final 15 minutes to secure the victory and record the shutout. A shot by Charleston Southern's Erica Gazzani was wide during the 86th minute.
Liberty outshot Charleston Southern, 17-8, and held a 6-3 edge in shots on goal in the match. The Lady Flames also held a 6-2 advantage in corner kicks.
CSU goalkeeper Brown made four saves.
With its regular season complete, Liberty will return to Osborne Stadium on Sunday to host a Big South Championship quarterfinals match against an opponent to be named later this evening. Match time is scheduled for 2 p.m. Official seedings and matchups will be announced later this evening.
