Liberty to Finish Regular Season at Charleston Southern

The Liberty Lady Flames will end their 2016 regular season with a match in Charleston, S.C., against the Charleston Southern Buccaneers, Tuesday. Match time at CSU Soccer Field is scheduled for 3 p.m. The match-up with the Buccaneers was originally scheduled for Oct. 8, but was postponed due to Hurricane Matthew.

Liberty (10-7, 6-2 Big South) has posted four consecutive shutouts. Its latest clean sheet was a 2-0 Senior Day win over UNC Asheville, Saturday. The Lady Flames' four straight shutouts are their most in a row since five to start the 2013 season.

Meanwhile, Charleston Southern (6-9-1, 2-5-1 Big South) fell at Longwood, 1-0, on Saturday.

A Look at Liberty
Liberty recorded its fourth consecutive shutout with a 2-0 Senior Day victory over UNC Asheville on Saturday. With the clean sheet, Head Coach Nate Norman's team has now posted seven shutouts as a team in 2016 and has not allowed a goal over their last 403:57 of play.

Gabrielle Farrell scored her seventh goal, Saturday. She is tied for the team lead with junior midfielder Isabella Habuda and also tied for third in the Big South in goals. The freshman forward paces the Liberty and is third in the conference with six assists, while also leading the Lady Flames and ranking second in 20 points.

Habuda enters the week with 17 points on the season. The midfielder is tied for third in goals and for fourth in points in the Big South.

Jennifer Knoebel and Devon Jones have also reached double-digits in points. Knoebel has collected all 12 of her points, four goals and four assists, against Big South opponents. Jones has netted four goals and assisted on two others for 10 points.

The reining Big South Defensive Player of the Week, goalkeeper Holly Van Noord leads the conference with a 0.86 goals-against average and a .851 save percentage. She has six shutouts on the season and has posted 39 career blank sheets to extend her Big South and Liberty record.

A Look at Charleston Southern
Charleston Southern returns home after a 0-2-1 road trip. Longwood edged the Buccaneers, 1-0, to complete the road swing on Saturday.

Forward Anna Sells is among the Big South leaders and leads the Buccaneers with eight goals and 17 points. Fellow forward Jordan Newman has also reached a double-digit point total with 11 points. She has five goals and an assist.

Liz Amanda Brown has taken over the goalkeeping duties for Charleston Southern. In 11 games, Brown has posted a 0.99 goals-against average and .853 save percentage.

The Series
Charleston Southern leads the all-time series, 13-12-3. Liberty has won the last three contests, including a 2-0 victory over Charleston Southern, last season.

The Standings
Tuesday marks the last day of regular season play. Liberty enters Tuesday tied for second in the Big South standings with a 6-2 mark and 18 points with Campbell and Gardner-Webb. High Point leads the conference with a 6-1-1 record and plays its final match of the regular season at Winthrop, Tuesday.

The top four teams in the Big South standings will host conference tournament quarterfinal matches next Sunday. The winners will move to Bryan Park in Greensboro, N.C., for the semifinals and finals on Nov. 4 and Nov. 6.

Van Noord Named Big South Defensive Player of the Week
Goalkeeper Holly Van Noord has been named the Big South Women's Defensive Player of the Week for games played Oct. 17-23. The weekly honor is the second for the Lady Flames goalkeeper, this season.

Van Noord made 14 saves in two shutouts during the week, helping Liberty to record its fourth consecutive shutout. The Hudsonville, Mich., native made seven saves in a 2-0 win over Radford on Wednesday. After being honored before the game, the redshirt senior then recorded seven stops in a 2-0 win over UNC Asheville on Senior Day, Saturday.

Van Noord has not allowed a goal in her last 392:01 between the goalposts. With the two blank sheets, she now has six shutouts on the year and extends her Big South and Liberty career record to 39.

News and Notes

  • Liberty has posted five straight shutouts twice in its history. Liberty posted five consecutive blank sheets from Oct. 5-25 in 2009 and Aug. 30-Sept. 12 in 2013.
  • Currently, goalkeeper Holly Van Noord ranks 23rd in the nation with an .862 save percentage.
  • Only one Liberty freshman has compiled more points during her freshman season than forward Gabrielle Farrell, who has 20. Lauren Coffey posted 32 points as a freshman in 1999.
  • Seniors Van Noord, Erika Troutman and Lizz Kappler will be playing in their last regular season in a Liberty uniform, Tuesday.

A Look Ahead
Liberty will host a yet to be determined team on Sunday at Osborne Stadium in the Big South Quarterfinals. Match time is at 2 p.m. Liberty's seeding and opponent will be announced after the conclusion of tomorrow's Big South contests.
