The Liberty doubles team of Diego Castano and Alex Poynter won the Black doubles flight at the NC State Invite over the weekend.

Castano and Poynter won three total matches, highlighted by an 8-2 victory in the championship over Marshall Waren and Andres Torres of UNCW on Saturday.

In their first match on Friday morning, the duo knocked off the pairing of Campbell's Nicolas Rakitin and Elon's Felipe Osses-Konig, 8-2. In the semifinals on Saturday, Castano and Poynter bested Fabien Ayet and Jonathan O'Neal of Campbell, 8-2.

In the Black singles bracket, Poynter won a match in the back draw, defeating The Citadel's Jack Pyritz, 0-6, 6-0, 6-0. Sophomore Ryker Heller bounced back from an opening-round loss in the Black singles draw to defeat The Citadel's Ryan Templet, 6-4, 6-2.

Sophomore Max Borcuti scored an impressive victory over No. 4 seed August Simonsen of James Madison, 7-5, 7-6 (3) in his first match on Friday. Borcuti was knocked out of the event in a tightly contested quarterfinal match against Campbell's O'Neal, 6-2, 4-6, 7-6 (5).

Collectively, the Flames won four doubles matches and three singles matches during the course of the three-day invite.

"We competed with four players and had a great time mixing it up at ACC power NC State. We got some great doubles play from Diego Castano and Alex Poynter, who won three matches and their doubles flight," said Liberty assistant coach Rich Benson. "We still have a lot of work to do to get our singles play where it needs to be, but we'll be working on it in preparation to play at Wake Forest in a couple of weeks."

Liberty will conclude its fall slate at the Wake Forest Invitational, which will be played from Nov. 11-13.
