Liberty to Host Campbell for Big South Match, Friday

The Liberty men's soccer team will host the Campbell Camels in a Big South Conference match, Friday evening at Osborne Stadium. Match time is scheduled for 7 p.m.

The visiting Camels (5-5, 2-2 Big South) had their match against Old Dominion postponed this past Tuesday due aftermath of Hurricane Matthew. Campbell defeated UNC Asheville, 2-1, last Friday.

Meanwhile, the Flames (4-7-1, 1-2 Big South) fell 3-2 in overtime in their last non-conference match of the regular season at Marshall, this past Saturday.

A Look at Liberty
Liberty enters Friday's contest off a 3-2 setback in overtime, this past Saturday at Marshall. Forward Forward Tresor Mbuyu scored his Big South-leading eighth goal and midfielder Kevin Mendoza converted a penalty kick for his fourth goal to tie the game in the second half, Saturday.

Mbuyu also leads the Big South Conference with 19 points. Mendoza is seventh in the conference and second on the Flames with 12 points. Mendoza is tied with freshman Rigo Rojas for the team lead and second in the Big South with four assists. Rojas has assisted on a goal in each of Liberty's last two games.

Midfielder Jovanni Chavez and forward Martin Agredo with three goals apiece, join Mbuyu and Mendoza as Flames with multiple goals, this season. Agredo and Chavez also have three assists each on the year.

Senior goalkeeper Jeremy Lee has started the last two contests for the Flames. Freshman James Knoebel started Liberty's first 10 games.

Head Coach Jeff Alder, a Liberty alum, is in his 16th season of leading the Flames. Liberty is 148-118-24 during his tenure.

A Look at Campbell
Campbell had its non-conference game against Old Dominion canceled due to the aftermath of Hurricane Matthew in the Buies Creek area, Tuesday.

The Camels will enter Friday's Big South match-up, having won their last two conference matches at home. Campbell defeated Winthrop, 4-1, on Oct. 4 and UNC Asheville, 2-1, last Friday.

Forward Gabe Parrish leads the Camels with five goals and 11 points. He among the conference leaders in both categories. Defender Daniel Mukuna is second on the Camels with three goals and seven points.

Goalkeeper Matthew Mozynski has started all 10 Campbell contests. He has posted a 2.14 goals-against average and a .686 save percentage.

Dustin Fonder is in his second season at Campbell, after eight seasons at High Point. Fonder's Camels have posted a 15-14 record during his tenure.

The Series
Campbell and Liberty will be meeting for the 24th time on Friday. The Camels lead the all-time series, 12-10-1. Last season, the Camels defeated the Flames, 2-1, in Buies Creek, N.C. Before that match, Liberty had won three consecutive matches between the two teams.

Flames News and Notes

  • Currently, Tresor Mbuyu ranks 13th in points and 15th nationally in goals. Midfielder Kevin Mendoza is 40th in the country in assists.
     
  • Liberty enters Friday's contest second in the Big South and 30th in the country in goals scored with 21.
     
  • Defender Geovanny Murillo, midfielder Alan Arellano and Mbuyu are the only Flames to start every game this season.
