Liberty to Face Marshall, Saturday

The Liberty men's soccer team (4-6-1, 1-2 Big South) will travel to Huntington, W.Va., for a non-conference match against the Marshall Thundering Herd (5-6, 1-2 Conference USA), Saturday. Match time is scheduled for 1 p.m. at the Veterans Memorial Soccer Complex.

The contest will be the Flames' last non-conference match of the 2016 regular season.

A Look at Liberty
The Flames will be looking to halt a three-game losing streak, Saturday. All three of Liberty's setbacks have been by one goal. Wednesday, Liberty was edged at Radford, 2-1.

Tresor Mbuyu scored his team-leading seventh goal of the year, Wednesday evening. The forward leads the Big South in points with 17 and is tied for the conference lead in goals. He is also among the Big South leaders with three assists.

Midfielder Kevin Mendoza is second on the Flames and eighth in the conference with 10 points. He leads Liberty and is tied for second in the Big South with four assists.

Midfielder Jovanni Chavez and forward Martin Agredo with three goals apiece join Mbuyu and Mendoza as Flames with multiple goals, this season. Agredo and Chavez also have three assists each on the year.

With an assist on Mbuyu's goal on Wednesday, Rigo Rojas now has three assists also.

Senior goalkeeper Jeremy Lee returned from injury to make his first start of the season, Wednesday. Lee made three saves in the match. Freshman James Knoebel started Liberty's first 10 games.

The Flames have scored 19 goals and allowed 20 goals, this season.

Head Coach Jeff Alder, a Liberty alum, is in his 16th season of leading the Flames. Liberty is 148-117-24 during his tenure.

A Look at Marshall

The Thundering Herd enters Saturday's contest also looking to snap a losing streak.  Marshall has lost it last two games, including a 2-1 setback to South Carolina in Conference USA play, this past Sunday.

Midfielder Daniel Jodah leads the Herd with three goals and seven points. Fellow midfielder Paul Whitener leads Marshall with four assists and is second with six points.

Trevor Clemens and Nate Himes have both seen time in goal for the Herd. Marshall has outscored its opponents, 15-10.

Head Coach Bob Gray is in his 22nd season at Marshall. He has posted a 184-181-34 record with the Herd.

The Series
Marshall and Liberty will be meeting for the 12th time on Saturday. The series is even at 4-4-3.

Flames News and Notes

  • Liberty is 3-2 on the road in 2016. The Flames have outscored their opponents, 12-10, in road contests.
     
  • Currently, Tresor Mbuyu ranks 16th in points and 19th nationally in goals. Midfielder Kevin Mendoza is 40th in the country in assists.
     
  • Liberty enters the week 30th in the country in goals scored with 19.
     
  • Team captain and defender Nico Bellarde, defender Geovanny Murillo, midfielder Alan Arellano and Mbuyu are the only Flames to start every game this season.
