For the second year in a row, the schedule at the Tar Heel Intercollegiate has been altered by an Atlantic Coast hurricane with play at the 2016 Tar Heel Intercollegiate now getting underway on Friday.
The two-day, 54-hole event was originally scheduled for 36 holes of competition on Saturday, followed by the final 18 holes of play on Sunday. However, inclement weather is forecasted all day on Saturday with high winds and rain from Hurricane Matthew.
The 13-team field will now take to the UNC Finley Golf Course (par 72, 7,242 yards) on Friday in an attempt to complete the event's first two rounds of play. Following a day off on Saturday, the tournament will conclude with 18 final holes of competition on Sunday.
Last year's Tar Heel Intercollegiate was completely cancelled due to inclement weather caused by Hurricane Joaquin.
The Flames enter the tournament having posted a pair of top-five finishes during their first two events of the 2016-17 schedule. Liberty finished in second place at the Rod Myers Invitational in September and in fifth place at last weekend's Marquette Intercollegiate.
Mickey DeMorat continues to pace Liberty's play early this year after ranking second on Flames' roster in stroke average in 2015-16. The junior has posted a pair of top-10 finishes this year and ranks fourth in the Big South with a 70.83 season stroke average.
Freshman Kieran Vincent leads the Flames and ranks third in the conference in season stroke average at 70.17. However, the rookie's average has received significant help from his 15-under par 201 score at the Rod Meyers Invitational, which allowed him to claim medalist honors in his first collegiate tournament.
Gabe Lench ranks third on Liberty's roster and tied for 16th in the Big South with a 72.33 season stroke average. The sophomore tied for 10th place at the Marquette Intercollegiate with a 1-over par 211 (70-72-69), his third career top-10 finish.
Isaiah Logue, a two-time All-Big South golfer for the Flames, played his final two rounds at the Marquette Intercollegiate at 1-over par to finish in a tie for 22nd place. The junior ranks second in school history with a 72.71 career stroke average and leads Liberty's active roster with nine career top-10 finishes.
