Liberty Takes to Road to Face Big South Opponent Radford

The Liberty men's soccer team (4-5-1, 1-1 Big South) will travel to Radford, Va., for a Big South Conference match against the Radford Highlanders (7-2, 1-0 Big South), Wednesday. Match time at Patrick D. Cupp Stadium is scheduled for 7 p.m.

A Look at Liberty
The Flames will be looking to halt a two-game losing streak, Wednesday, after falling to UNC Asheville, 4-3, in Big South Conference play on Saturday. The Bulldogs netted the game-winning goal with 30 second left in regulation.

Tresor Mbuyu scored his team-leading sixth goal of the year and Martin Agredo netted his third goal of 2016, becoming the fourth Flame with three or more goals on the season. Rigo Rojas' first collegiate goal tied the contest with less than three minutes left to play at 3-3.

Mbuyu enters the week second in the Big South in goals and points with 15. Along with his six goals, the forward has three assists. Midfielder Kevin Mendoza is second on the Flames and tied for fifth in the conference with 10 points, thanks to a team-leading four assists and three goals.

Midfielder Jovanni Chavez and Agredo with three goals apiece join Mbuyu and Mendoza as Flames with multiple goals, this season. Agredo and Chavez also have three assists each on the year.

Goalkeeper James Knoebel has played every minute between the posts for the Flames this season. The freshman enters Wednesday's contest with a 1.75 goals-against average and a .735 save percentage.

Head Coach Jeff Alder, a Liberty alum, is in his 16th season of leading the Flames. Liberty is 148-116-24 during his tenure.

A Look at Radford
Radford opened Big South Conference play with a 1-0 win at Gardner-Webb, Saturday. The Big South Preseason favorite, is 7-2 overall. The Highlanders have received votes in several naitonal polls and is ranked eighth in the latest South Region poll.

The Highlanders have outscored their opponents, 15-7. Sivert Daehlie is Radford's leading scorer with nine points, netting four goals and adding an assist.

2015 Big South All-Conference first team goalkeeper Aitor Pouseu Blanco has posted a 0.74 goals-against average and a .824 save percentage.

Marc Reeves is in his seventh season at Radford, posting a 61-39-18 record. Last season, he led the Highlanders to an at-large berth in the NCAA Tournament.

The Series
Liberty holds a 22-18-8 advantage in the all-time series with Radford. However, the Highlanders have won the last three meetings, including a 3-0 win at Liberty, last season. The Flames have faced the Highlanders on the pitch more than any other team in their history. 

Flames News and Notes

  • With its win at Winthrop in its last road game on Sept. 24, Liberty has posted a 3-1 road mark in 2016. The Flames have outscored their opponents, 11-8, in road contests.
  • Currently, Tresor Mbuyu ranks 25th in points and 27th nationally in goals. Meanwhile, James Knoebel ranks 11th among all goalkeepers in the country by averaging 5.0 saves per game.
  • Liberty has scored 18 goals and given up 18 goals, so far this season. The Flames are third in the Big South Conference in goals.
  • Midfielder Kevin Mendoza has already set personal single season-highs with three goals, four assists and 10 points this season.

A Look Ahead
Liberty will travel to Huntington, W.Va., for its final non-conference match of the year against the Marshall Thundering Herd, Saturday. Match time is scheduled for 1 p.m. at the Veterans Memorial Soccer Complex.
