Liberty Men's Basketball Head Coach Ritchie McKay has announced the hiring of Vic Sfera as assistant coach heading into the 2016-17 season. Sfera makes his way to the Hill City following two seasons with the Virginia men's basketball program.
"I am elated to welcome Vic Sfera to our basketball family," McKay stated. "I've had the great fortune of knowing him for a while and have seen firsthand the value he added to the previous programs he was a part of."
Sfera, who served as the men's basketball technology assistant at UVA from 2010-12, re-joined the Virginia men's basketball staff after a two-year stint as an assistant coach at Northern Arizona University. He was promoted to director of scouting/recruiting after serving as a technology and scouting assistant for UVA in 2014-15.
In addition to his time at UVA, Sfera was a member of the technical staff for the U16 Romanian national team, working with the squad during the 2016 FIBA European Championships in Sofia, Bulgaria, this past August. Among his duties, Sfera helped prepare the team for competition, assisting the coaching staff with scouting and player development.
"I am honored to be joining the men's basketball staff at Liberty University," Sfera said. "The university's commitment to Training Champions for Christ and the opportunity to serve student-athletes alongside Coach McKay and his staff drew me to this special place. I believe that this program is on the rise and I am excited to be a part of it."
During his time with the Lumberjacks, Sfera helped NAU advance to the Big Sky Conference Tournament each year and saw one of the biggest turnarounds in program history. Sfera was primarily responsible for coaching the team's perimeter players, opponent scouting and recruiting.
Prior to Virginia, Sfera worked under then first-year head coach Josh Pastner at the University of Memphis in 2009-10 where he served as the head student manager, helping the Tigers advance to the NIT.
Sfera began his collegiate coaching career as a student assistant coach and video coordinator under NAIA Hall of Fame coach Dr. Dave Holmquist at Biola University in La Mirada, California. He was involved in the Eagles' game preparation, player development and recruiting efforts, and helped Biola advance to the 2009 NAIA National Tournament in Kansas City, Missouri.
In 2006-07, Sfera served as an assistant coach at his alma mater, Capistrano Valley Christian School under San Diego High School Hall of Champions coach Randy Wright. He has worked at numerous basketball camps around the country including Colorado, Pepperdine, UC-Irvine and Arizona. Sfera also served as a head coach with the North Orange County Stars AAU program and assisted with the California Summer Pro League.
Sfera played collegiately at MiraCosta College in Oceanside, Calif., after prepping at Capistrano Valley Christian School where he was an All-Academy League selection and one of the top three-point shooters in the CIF-Southern Section.
Sfera earned his bachelor's degree from the University of Memphis in interdisciplinary studies with a concentration in behavioral sciences and sport studies in 2010. He earned his master's degree in coaching and athletic administration from Concordia University in 2013.
