Four Liberty student-athletes recently attended the Big South's annual Student-Athlete Leadership Conference, held July 8-10 in Black Mountain, N.C.

Ryan Hiepler (men's basketball), Casey Thate (women's lacrosse), Sheana Vega (women's basketball) and Hannah Weidner (volleyball) represented Liberty at the three-day leadership conference. While at the conference, Liberty's representatives joined student-athletes from all nine other Big South institutions for a valuable weekend of learning experiences.

"The Big South Leadership Conference was an incredible experience," Thate said. "We were able to come together as one conference, build each other up and form lifelong friendships. Sue Ramsey's words resonated with me most, especially when she said, ‘You don't have to be great to serve, but you have to serve to be great.' It is a privilege to serve our teammates and we need to embrace them, because no matter what role they have on our team, every role is equal in value and importance."

Musco Sports Lighting served as the sponsor of the event, with Musco's staff members among those presenting. Also speaking were Big South Commissioner Kyle Kallander and various special guests. These speakers provided insight into teamwork, leadership and embracing the value of being a collegiate student-athlete.

Participants also had the opportunity to learn alongside student-athletes from every school in the conference, getting to know them outside of the field of competition. They learned together, through leadership discussions and team-building activities. All of the participants also took part in a service activity in the local area. The weekend ended with an informational session about current Big South Conference initiatives, the NCAA and Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) and how all organizations support their efforts as leaders, both academically and athletically.
