Lady Flames Fall to Old Dominion in Home Opener

Old Dominion's Shavon Knight had two goals, leading the Monarchs past the Liberty Lady Flames, 5-0, Saturday night in the home opener at Liberty Soccer Field.

Liberty drops to 0-4 on the season, while Old Dominion improves 3-1-1. The Monarchs have beaten the Lady Flames in each of their three meetings.

Pressing the Liberty net to open the contest, Old Dominion tallied its first score in the game's 11th minute. Forward Jenna Pearson broke free at the top of the box and fired a shot which was blocked by Liberty goalkeeper Ashley Nyholt (Fr., Brampton, Ont.). The rebound came out to midfielder Elizabeth Brewster who put the ball past the Lady Flames keeper for her first goal of the year.

At the 36:29 mark, a foul in the goalie box by Liberty resulted in a penalty kick for Old Dominion. However, Pearson failed to extend the Monarch lead as her kick went wide.

Liberty countered with a scoring opportunity of its own in the waning minutes of the first half. Midfielder Amy Oberlin (Jr., Ada, Mich.) had two shot attempts during a two minute span, both sailing wide of the net.

Old Dominion took a 2-0 advantage to the locker room with a goal in the final minute of the half. On a corner kick, Pearson found the head of Caroline Brown who put the ball into the top of the net for her first goal of the season at 44:29.

In the second half, the Monarchs added to their lead less than three minutes into the final period. Old Dominion forward Shavon Knight made a move in the midfield past the defense into the box and scored her first goal of the night for a 3-0 advantage at 47:48.

Knight added her second goal of the night and her fifth of the year 14 minutes later. The forward pounced on a loose ball and got behind the Liberty goalkeeper to make it 4-0 in the game's 62nd minute.

Liberty generated several chances over the next 20 mintues. Rachel Hetrick (Sr., F, Grantville, Pa.) had two shots during the sequence, forcing the Monarch keeper Colby Owen to make a save, while Ally Erving (R-So., F, Anchorage, Alaska) also had a shot on net which the Old Dominion keeper stopped.

At 81:23, the Monarchs' Lisa McKenzie added a goal for the final score of 5-0.

Old Dominion outshot Liberty, 20-10, including a 11-3 advantage in the first half. The Monarchs also held the a 5-4 edge in corner kicks.

Liberty goalkeeper Nyholt had seven saves in the game, while Lauren Khamphuis (R-So., Bloomignton, Ill.) made one save in relief of Nyholt. Old Dominion starter Lauren Tupman did not make a save during her 36 minutes in the Monarch net, while Owen made three stops.

The Lady Flames travel to Charlottesville, Va., to square off with No. 10 Virginia on Friday night. Game time is scheduled for 7 p.m.
