Liberty student-athletes Natalie Beale, Dalton Britt, Madi Long, Ashley Rininger, David Scouten and Sachem Wilson are all included on the 2015-16 Virginia Sports Information Directors (VaSID) Academic All-State Team.
Every Commonwealth college and university, including NCAA Division I, II, and III, NAIA, and independents, had the opportunity to submit athletes to be honored. To be eligible, student-athletes were required to have a cumulative grade point average of 3.25 or better. The student must have achieved sophomore status, and he or she could not have been in the first season of competition at their current school.
Beale, hailing from Baltimore, Md., majored in exercise science. She held a 4.0 GPA throughout four years of college, earning the prestigious George A. Christenberry Award for Academic Excellence. Additionally, she was voted to the CoSIDA Academic All-America® At-Large second team. She set a program record while placing second in the 200 freestyle at the CCSA Championships in a NCAA B cut time of 1:47.97.
A native of Greenville, N.C., Britt started every game of his career with the Liberty baseball team, setting a program record with 239 games played. He finished fourth in program history with 249 career hits. After graduating with a 3.88 GPA in communication studies in 2015 and obtaining a master's degree in strategic communication in May, Britt was a 31st-round draft pick of the Detroit Tigers. He is currently playing for the Gulf Coast League Tigers West in Lakeland, Fla.
Long completed her undergraduate career for the women's swimming & diving team in just two years, graduating with a 4.0 GPA in business marketing. The Kernersville, N.C., native is a two-time member of the CCSA All-Academic Team. She scored 47 points at the 2016 CCSA Championships as she placed sixth in the 1-meter springboard and seventh in the 3-meter springboard. Upon graduation, her top diving marks both rank third in program history.
Rininger, a women's basketball player from Canton, Ohio, is included on the VaSID Academic All-State Team for the third straight year. She completed three degrees during her time at Liberty (bachelor's in criminal justice, master's in human services counseling and master's in criminal justice), maintaining a 4.0 GPA throughout. A two-time CoSIDA Academic All-American® and a three-time Big South Scholar-Athlete of the Year, Rininger was the 2016 Rock Royer/Mac Rivera Award winner. The Rock Royer/Mac Rivera Award honors the top graduating senior student-athlete at Liberty.
Scouten earned CoSIDA Academic All-America® honors after completing his final season on the men's track & field team. The native of Brooklyn, Mich., graduated with a 3.95 GPA as a double major in criminal justice and accounting. Scouten was Liberty's male nominee for the George A. Christenberry Award for Academic Excellence. He finished his career as a two-time Big South champion and a 13-time All-Big South performer.
Wilson, a four-year member of the men's soccer program, graduated with a 3.66 GPA in communication studies. A native of Stow, Ohio, Wilson was a two-time Big South All-Academic Team honoree. He led the Flames in scoring as a sophomore, junior and senior, wrapping up his career with 26 career goals. Wilson is currently playing professionally with ND Gorcia of the Slovenia first division.
