Kayla Foster was voted VaSID State Rookie of the Year and earned second team all-state honors.
Following a banner freshman season, Liberty's Kayla Foster has been named the 2016 VaSID All-State University Division Women's Lacrosse Rookie of the Year, highlighting three Lady Flames' selections on the all-state teams.
Foster, who was also a second-team selection, was joined by teammates Colleen Ekert (first team) and Kallie Britton (second team) on the all-state teams. The listing was announced by the Virginia Sports Information Directors (VaSID) earlier today.
Foster led the Lady Flames' program during the 2016 season, finishing her first year at Liberty with 51 points and 29 assists. Both marks rank second in the program's single-season record book.
The attacker from Sewickley, Pa., ranked third on the team with 22 goals and finished the year with a 78.3 shots-on-goal shooting percentage (36-of-46). She was also named the Big South Freshman of the Year and an All-Big South second-team honoree.
Foster becomes the second player in the program's short seven-year history to be named VaSID Rookie of the Year. Britton was the state's top freshman selection in 2013.
Ekert was one of three first-team All-VaSID defenders named to this year's list, receiving first-team honors for the second consecutive season. The redshirt senior was one of three Lady Flames to start all 18 games in 2016 and she was named to the All-Big South first team for the second year in a row.
The native of Smithtown, N.Y., led the Lady Flames with 44 ground balls and 37 caused turnovers, while adding 20 draw controls. She finished her career ranked third in program history with 69 caused turnovers.
Britton joined Foster on the All-VaSID second-team listing after leading the Lady Flames during the 2016 season with 36 goals and 65 shots. The midfielder also ranked second on the team with 47 points, aided by 11 assists.
The native of Overland Park, Kan., finished her career at Liberty ranked No. 3 in program history with 166 career points and No. 4 with 106 career goals scored.
Old Dominion's Ashmore Standing was named the VaSID Player of the Year. The redshirt senior was named the Atlantic Sun Player of the Year after setting a new Old Dominion record with 67 goals during the 2016 season.
Old Dominion's Heather Holt rounded out this year's major VaSID all-state award winners, as she was named the VaSID Coach of the Year. Holt led the Monarchs to an Atlantic Sun title and the program's first-ever trip to the NCAA Championship following a 16-4 season.
