Mychelle Cumings will compete at the NCAA Division I East Preliminary Round meet for the fourth time in her career next week, throwing the shot put.

The three-day competition will take place May 26-28 at North Florida's Hodges Stadium in Jacksonville, Fla.
Seven Liberty men's athletes will compete in Jacksonville, including Aklesso Agama (triple jump), Ryan Davis (400 hurdles), Steve Feister (javelin), Fred Fulton (discus), Darrel Jones (triple jump), Denzel Pratt (javelin) and Carson Waters (pole vault).
They will be joined by four Lady Flames, including Mychelle Cumings (shot put), Erin Edmond (400), Ednah Kurgat (5K) and Dasiana Larson (hammer).
The meet, which will determine the qualifiers for the 2016 NCAA Division I Outdoor Track & Field Championships, will get started May 26 at noon with the men's hammer and women's javelin. Larson will be the first Lady Flame to compete, with the women's hammer set to begin May 26 at 4 p.m.
The 2016 NCAA Division I Outdoor Track & Field Championships will be contested June 8-11 at Hayward Field in Eugene, Ore. The top 12 finishers in each event at the NCAA Division I East Preliminary Round meet will advance to Eugene, where they will be joined by 12 qualifiers per event from the concurrent NCAA Division I West Preliminary Round meet, which will take place in Lawrence, Kan.
The following is a breakdown of Liberty's NCAA Division I East Preliminary Round qualifiers by the numbers.
1: Denzel Pratt is the Flames' lone freshman who will compete in Jacksonville and one of eight freshmen who qualified in the East Region men's javelin this season.
1: Mychelle Cumings is the only one of Liberty's 11 Jacksonville qualifiers who has previously advanced to the NCAA Division I Outdoor Track & Field Championships. Cumings qualified to Eugene in the women's discus in 2013.
2: Ednah Kurgat is Liberty's highest seed at this meet at No. 2. Her Liberty and Big South-record 5K time of 15:48.63 trails only Boston College's Liv Westphal among East Region athletes.
2: Liberty will be represented in two events for the first time in NCAA Division I East Preliminary Round meet history, including the women's 400 (Erin Edmond) and women's 5K (Ednah Kurgat).
3: Three Florida natives will get to return to their home state next week, including Aklesso Agama (Miami), Ryan Davis (Deerfield Beach) and Carson Waters (St. Petersburg Beach). All three of them competed in the Florida High School Athletic Association state championship meet at Hodges Stadium during their high school careers.
4: Mychelle Cumings will make her fourth appearance at the NCAA Division I East Preliminary Round meet (also 2012, 2013 and 2015), but this will be her first time throwing only one implement (shot put). She joins Ryan Smith (2010-13) as the only Flames to qualify for this meet four times.
4: On the opposite end of the experience spectrum, four Liberty athletes will make their NCAA Division I East Preliminary Round meet debuts next week. These include Darrel Jones, Dasiana Larson, Denzel Pratt and Carson Waters. Erin Edmond will compete at the meet in a Liberty uniform for the first time, but does boast previous NCAA Division I East Preliminary Round meet experience from her time at Vanderbilt.
4: Four Liberty seniors will make the trip to Jacksonville, including Mychelle Cumings, Erin Edmond, Steve Feister and Fred Fulton.
4: Four of Liberty's Jacksonville qualifiers captured Big South titles in their respective events last week, including Erin Edmond (women's 400), Mychelle Cumings (women's shot put), Fred Fulton (men's discus) and Steve Feister (men's javelin).
5: Saturday's men's triple jump will feature five Big South Conference entrants. Liberty's Aklesso Agama and Darrel Jones will be joined by Lorne Jenkins (Campbell), EJ Reddick (Charleston Southern) and Will Narramore (High Point).
10: This is the sixth time in the seven-year history of the NCAA Division I East Preliminary Round meet that Liberty has qualified 10+ athletes.
59: Erin Edmond was Liberty's most unlikely qualifier, ranking 59th on the East Region women's 400 performance list prior to declarations. Ryan Davis (No. 51, men's 400 hurdles) and Dasiana Larson (No. 52, women's hammer) also qualified to the meet despite sitting outside the top 48 in their respective events.
