Flames celebrate a goal earlier this season.
Coming off of road victories over Campbell and Gardner-Webb last week, the Liberty men's soccer team has been ranked among the South-Atlantic Region's top teams in the latest regional rankings. Future Liberty opponent Virginia tops the regional rankings. The Flames appear in the regional rankings at the No. 10 spot. The Flames enter the week with a 3-0 mark on the season, after a 1-0 victory at Campbell and a 2-1 win at Gardner-Webb in their two contests last week. Liberty scored on its first shot of the contest Wednesday and then rode a strong defensive effort in defeating Campbell. The Camels were ranked seventh in the South Region at the time. On Saturday, the Flames became the first Liberty squad to open the season, 3-0 since 1985, with their victory at Gardner-Webb. Joshua Boateng (Jr., MF, Accra, Ghana) and Adrian Bumbut (Sr., F, Zalau, Romania) each scored a goal early in the second half and Liberty used another outstanding defensive effort down the stretch in the win. The Flames have yielded just one goal this season and posted shutouts in their first two contests of year. Liberty, with freshmen keeper Paul Gilbert in net (Rockvale, Tenn.), held opponents scoreless for 243:18 to begin the season, before yielding a goal in the 64th minute of Saturday's contest at Gardner-Webb. Offensively, Bumbut leads the Flames with seven points on three goals and an assist, while Boateng tallied his first points of the season on Saturday with a goal and an assist. Liberty returns to action this weekend by participating in the UNC Wilmington Soccer Classic, this Friday and Sunday.
