NCAA Albuquerque Regional Notes

For the fifth time in the last six seasons and seventh time overall, Liberty's men's golf team will compete in an NCAA Regional as the Flames are the No. 11 seed at next week's NCAA Albuquerque Regional.

Regional play gets underway on Monday at the Championship Course at the University of New Mexico in Albuquerque, N.M. (par 72, 7,562 yards).

Liberty advanced to NCAA Regional play by posting a 12-stroke victory at the 2016 Big South Men's Golf Championship in April. The Flames carded an 11-under 853 (286-281-286) at the Patriot Golf Club in Ninety Six, S.C., to win its fourth Big South title in program history.

The top five teams from each of the six NCAA Regionals will advance to the NCAA Men's Golf Championship, which will be contested at the Eugene Country Club in Eugene, Ore., May 27 – June 1.

Liberty will be looking to advance to the NCAA Men's Golf Championship for the second time in program history. The Flames captured the title at the NCAA Greensboro Regional and finished in 10th place in the 2012 NCAA Men's Golf Championship at the famed Riviera Country Club in Pacific Palisades, Calif.

The Albuquerque Regional field includes five conference champions who were automatic qualifiers into this field: No. 3 seed South Florida (American Athletic Conference), No. 11 seed Liberty (Big South Conference), No. 12 seed Army (Patriot League), No. 13 seed Cleveland State (Horizon League) and No. 14 seed Wagner (Northeast Conference).

No. 1 seed USC leads the field at the Albuquerque Regional, as the Trojans are currently ranked No. 3 in the latest Golfstat national rankings.

USC is followed by No. 2 seed Arizona State (No. 11 nationally), No. 3 seed South Florida (No. 15 nationally), No. 4 seed San Diego State (No. 22 nationally) and No. 5 seed Texas A&M (No. 27 nationally).

Four out of Liberty's starting five golfers at the NCAA Albuquerque Regional will be teeing it up for the first time at an NCAA postseason event.

Liberty's lone golfer with NCAA Regional experience is two-time All-Big South golfer Isaiah Logue. Last year, the 2015 Big South Freshman of the Year individually qualified for the NCAA Chapel Hill Regional in Chapel Hill, N.C. He finished the event tied for 55th place with a 7-over par 223 (78-72-73).

Logue led the Flames during the 2015-16 season, posting a team-best 72.18 season stroke average. He posted five top 10 finishes, including a team-best three top five showings.

The sophomore was Liberty's top golfer at the Big South Men's Golf Championship. He finished in second place, carding a 7-under par 209 (70-69-70).

Mickey DeMorat ranks second on Liberty's roster with a 72.62 season stroke average and earned All-Big South honors during his first year at Liberty. The sophomore transfer, who was an All-American at Eastern Florida State last year, tied Logue with five top 10 finishes. He led the Flames with a 71.95 stroke average during the spring.

Payton Taylor ranks third on Liberty's roster with a 74.21 season stroke average. He posted four top 20 finishes this season and carded 11 rounds at par or better.

Gabe Lench, a member of the 2016 Big South All-Freshman team, ranks fourth on Liberty's roster with a 74.66 season stroke average. He had a pair of top 10 finishes during his rookie season at Liberty, including shared medalist honors with Logue at the Rees Jones Invitational in September.

Hutson Chandler, who was named the 2016 Big South All-Academic team, posted a 74.80 season stroke average. He is coming off his best performance of the season where he finished tied for 14th place at the Big South Men's Golf Championship with a 4-over par 220 (75-71-74).

Hole-by-hole live scoring will be available throughout the event via Golfstat. @LUGameDay (Liberty's Game Day Twitter account) will be on the course providing more in-depth coverage of Liberty's golfers as they seek to advance to the NCAA Men's Golf Championship.
