Julia DiMartino has been named Big South Pitcher of the Week for the second week in a row.
For the second week in a row, Liberty freshman pitcher Julia DiMartino has been named the Big South Pitcher of the Week.
Hailing from Brockport, N.Y., DiMartino becomes first Lady Flame since Tiffani Smith in 2010 to be named Big South Pitcher of the Week in back-to-back weeks. She also joins teammate Chase Cassady (March 14) as Lady Flames to be named Big South Pitcher of the Week this season.
Last week, DiMartino went 2-1 with a 1.73 ERA, 29 strikeouts, one shutout, one no-hitter and a .176 opponents' batting average in 24 1/3 innings pitched.
On Tuesday at Radford, she went the distance in Liberty's 4-3, 10-inning victory at Radford. She allowed just one earned run on five hits, striking out 10 batters. After taking the loss on Wednesday at Radford, she came back and pitched the first no-hitter by a Lady Flame in Liberty Softball Stadium history. DiMartino tossed her second no-hitter of the season on Friday against Gardner-Webb, facing just one batter over the minimum. She struck out nine and walked one.
DiMartino has set new program freshman records with 174 strikeouts and six shutouts. She is also tied for the freshman record in both no-hitters (two) and wins (16).
The Lady Flames have concluded their 2016 regular-season schedule with a 30-26 record, including a 16-8 mark in Big South play. Liberty will next compete at the 2016 Big South Softball Championship, held May 11-14 at Terry Field in Rock Hill, S.C. Seeding for the conference tournament will be announced next Sunday, May 8.
