Chase Cassady pitched 3 2/3 innings of hitless relief, earning the win in a 4-1 victory against Gardner-Webb.
Liberty completed a doubleheader sweep of the visiting Gardner-Webb Runnin' Bulldogs, posting a 4-1, game-two victory on Friday night at Kamphuis Field at Liberty Softball Stadium.
The Lady Flames (29-26, 15-8 Big South) extend their program single-season record for conference wins to 15. Liberty held the Runnin' Bulldogs (18-31, 4-16) to just one run on five hits during today's twin bill, no-hitting Gardner-Webb, 1-0, in game one. The Runnin' Bulldogs have lost 10 games in a row.
Chase Cassady (8-8) earned the victory, allowing no hits while striking out four and walking one in 3 2/3 innings of relief. Julia DiMartino, coming off of her game-one no-hitter, started to contest and yielded just one run on five hits, striking out five in 3 1/23 innings.
Mackenzie Thompson fell to 9-12 with the loss, allowing four runs, three earned, on seven hits, walking four and striking out three in six innings of work.
Kassidy McCoy went 2-for-3 with one RBI, while Sarah Robertson batted 2-for-4 with one run scored and one RBI. Rylee Reynolds hit 1-for-2 with one double, one run and one RBI, while Tori Zavodny and Blair Lawrence scored one run apiece.
Gardner-Webb's Allie Barrick went 2-for-3, while Megan Gibbons batted 1-for-3 with a home run and Megan Champion (1-for-3) tripled.
Barrick hit a one-out single to right in the top of the second, before getting thrown out at second. Champion followed with a triple, before DiMartino fanned Callie Thornton for the third out.
For the second game in a row, McCoy gave Liberty a 1-0 lead with a two-out RBI single in the bottom of the second inning. With Reynolds on second, McCoy lined a single to left center, making it 1-0, Liberty.
The Lady Flames added to their advantage with an unearned run in the third frame. Zavodny reached second on a two-base error, before Robertson singled to center for a 2-0 edge.
The visitors trimmed the deficit in half in the top of the fourth, when Gibbons blasted a one-out solo homer to left. After a Barrick single, Cassady came on in relief of DiMartino. Cassady struck out the next two batters, ending the threat.
During the fifth inning, Jill Blank drew a leadoff walk and went to second on a sacrifice bunt. A groundout sent her to third, but a flyout kept the score at 2-1.
Liberty added an insurance run during the fifth frame. With one out, Robertson and Alexia Taylor hit consecutive singles. Deidra See flied out to left, before Reynolds doubled to left field, plating Robertson for a 3-1 cushion.
An error put Scarlett Harris on first to start the sixth inning. A pair of strikeouts and a fielder's choice kept Liberty's two-run lead intact.
Alert baserunning produced Liberty's fourth run, during the bottom of the sixth. Lawrence stole second with one out. After a strikeout, Zavodny dropped a perfect bunt down. While Zavodny took second with no one covering the base on the play, Lawrence raced home.
Cassady pitched a 1-2-3 seventh inning, finishing off the 4-1 victory.
Liberty and Gardner-Webb wrap up this weekend's series with a single game, tomorrow at 2 p.m.
