After posting impressive marks at the Virginia Challenge, Liberty sophomore Darrel Jones and freshman Delaney McDowell both earned Big South weekly awards. Jones was named Big South Men's Field Athlete of the Week, while McDowell was honored as Co-Big South Women's Track Athlete of the Week.
Jones, a native of Monroe, N.Y., earns his third career Big South weekly honor thanks in large part to his career-best triple jump mark of 50-11. The best triple jump performance by a Flame since 2010 placed Jones fifth in the event's invitational section and punched his ticket to the NCAA Division I East Preliminary Round meet.
Jones, who now ranks No. 3 in program history and No. 4 on the Big South's all-time men's triple jump list, also performed well in the long jump. He finished seventh in the invitational section with a season-best leap of 23-3.5, just one-half inch shy of his best-ever outdoor mark.
McDowell won her heat and placed 10th of 64 competitors in the women's 800 with her personal-best 2:08.59 clocking. She moved into fourth place in both program and Big South Conference history while breaking Jaime Watson's Liberty freshman-record time of 2:08.89 from 2006.
McDowell, who hails from Mason, Ohio, currently ranks No. 59 in the East Region for the 800, including seventh among freshmen. She tops the Big South performance list by 0.74 seconds over teammate Ansley Gebben.
Liberty will return to action at this weekend's Highlander Invitational, although neither Jones nor McDowell are expected to compete. The two-day event is slated for Friday and Saturday at Cupp Stadium in Radford, Va.
