After concluding the regular season yesterday afternoon with a 21-6 victory over Presbyterian, the Liberty lacrosse squad shifts its focus to the 2016 Big South Women's Lacrosse Championship which begins on Saturday with the quarterfinal matchups.
The Lady Flames enter the tournament as the No. 5 seed, and will square off against No. 4 seed Coastal Carolina at 1 p.m. in Conway, S.C.
The Chanticleers bested the Lady Flames in overtime by the final score of 11-10 back on April 2 in Conway earlier this year.
Liberty finished the regular season with a 5-12 overall mark, including 4-4 in conference action. Coastal Carolina finished the season with a 9-6 overall mark and a 5-3 record in Big South play.
Winthrop is the outright 2016 Big South women's lacrosse regular-season champion and the No. 1 seed in the Big South Championship. The Eagles finished with a perfect 8-0 conference record to win their second straight regular-season crown and they will serve as host of the semifinals and finals on May 5 and 7 at Eagle Field. The Eagles will take on No. 8 seed Presbyterian at 7 p.m. in Rock Hill, S.C., on Saturday.
High Point garners the No. 2 seed after finished the season with a 7-1 Big South record. The Panthers will square off against No. 7 seed Gardner-Webb at 3 p.m. in High Point, N.C., on Saturday.
The eight-team field is rounded out by the No. 3 vs. the No. 6 matchup. Campbell received the No. 3 seed after finishing the conference season with a 5-3 overall mark. The Camels defeated the Chanticleers in the head-to-head matchup to claim the tiebreaker. Longwood will take on the Camels as the No. 6 seed in the field. The Lancers most recently defeated Campbell yesterday by the final score of 13-12 in Buies Creek, N.C. Longwood returns to Buies Creek on Saturday to take on Campbell at noon.
The winner of the Liberty vs. Coastal Carolina contest will face the victor in the Winthrop vs. Presbyterian matchup in the first semifinal match on May 5 at 4 p.m.
The quarterfinals and semifinals will be broadcast live on the Big South Network, while the championship contest will be carried live on ESPN3 at noon on May 7. The Big South champion receives an automatic bid to the NCAA Women's Lacrosse Championship, which gets underway on May 27.
