The Liberty Lady Flames lacrosse squad earned its third consecutive victory, this time against Presbyterian on Senior Day to end the regular season. The Lady Flames bested the Blue Hose 21-6 to improve to 5-12, including 4-4 in conference action. Presbyterian falls to 3-14 overall and 1-7 in Big South play.
Prior to the contest, Liberty honored eight senior competitors as well as two members of the support staff.
The Liberty offense was led offensively by senior captain Kallie Britton and senior midfielder Natalie Silvers with a combined seven goals. Freshman Kayla Foster also chipped in six points on three goals and three assists.
Presbyterian began the contest by netting the first goal in the fourth minute of play when Megan Dreyer buried her 12th tally of the season to take an early 1-0 lead.
Liberty connected on three unanswered goals to claim the 3-1 lead over the Blue Hose, a lead they would not relinquish. The Liberty goals were netted by three consecutive seniors in Kelly Belue, Britton and Silvers. Britton's first strike of the contest marked the senior midfielder's 100th career goal.
Presbyterian cut the deficit down to one when Lauren Schaaf capitalized on her 32nd goal of the year with 17:19 remaining in the first half.
The Lady Flames quickly buried the hopes of a Presbyterian upset after exploding on a 9-0 run to close the half and push the lead to ten. Britton, Foster, Michaele Rich and Brianna McCaffrey each netted two goals during the run. Abigail Britton recorded the final goal of the half for the Lady Flames.
The Blue Hose notched the first goal of the second half to cut the deficit down to single digits with 28:06 remaining in the second stanza.
The Lady Flames quickly responded with four consecutive goals over the next 10 minutes of play. Two of the goals were netted by Callie Francis, while the other two were collected by Foster and Alyssa Kidder.
Liberty outscored Presbyterian 5-3 over the final 15 minutes of competition to solidify the 21-6 victory in favor of the host squad. Silvers recorded two of the final five goals, while Britton and Kidder each recorded one.
With 2:37 remaining in regulation, senior defender Colleen Ekert found the back of the net for the first time on just her fourth shot in her Liberty career. Ekert is known for her stout defense, including causing turnovers and recording ground balls. Ekert's goal was set up by Francis following a free-position attempt.
Aubrie Tarris competed in goal for the Lady Flames, notching six saves and yielding six goals. The freshman keeper improves to 3-5 following the victory.
Liberty outshot Presbyterian by the final of 35-15, while also winning both ground ball (26-22) and draw control (17-12) battles.
The Lady Flames will return to action on April 30 in the Big South Lacrosse Championship quarterfinals. Liberty's opponent, location and time of competition is yet to be determined.
