Thanks to a record-breaking 15:48.63 5K at the Mt. SAC Relays, Liberty sophomore Ednah Kurgat has been named the Big South Women's Track Athlete of the Week.
Prior to Friday's race in Norwalk, Calif., Ashley Osborne had owned the Lady Flames' outdoor 5K record of 16:31.00 since May 14, 2010. The Big South mark of 16:26.99 had stood for 20 years, since Coastal Carolina's Catherine Conder posted the time on April 20, 1996.
Kurgat shattered both records while placing ninth in the invitational women's 5K, including third among collegiate runners. The native of Eldoret, Kenya currently ranks No. 4 on the NCAA Division I women's 5K list for the 2016 season and has punched her ticket to the NCAA Division I East Preliminary Round meet in Jacksonville, Fla.
Kurgat will take this weekend off from competition, but her teammates will be divided between the Virginia Challenge and Duke Invitational.
Most of the Flames and Lady Flames will compete in the Virginia Challenge, Friday and Saturday at Lannigan Field in Charlottesville, Va. Meanwhile, nine Liberty athletes will compete in the 800-meter run at the Duke Invitational, Friday afternoon at Morris Williams Stadium in Durham, N.C.
