Flames Prepare for Big South Men's Golf Championship

No. 3 seed Liberty will begin its quest to return as a team to the NCAA Regional next week when they compete for the title at the 2016 Big South Men's Golf Championship.

The three-day, 54-hole event returns to The Patriot Golf Club (par 72, 7,120 yards) in Ninety Six, S.C., for the ninth-consecutive season. Play gets underway on Sunday morning at 8:30 a.m.

During the first two days of competition, the Flames will be paired with golfers from No. 1 seed Charleston Southern and No. 2 seed Campbell. The Buccaneers enter the event as the defending champion after finishing six strokes ahead of the Camels at last year's tournament.

Liberty finished last year's championship in fifth place, carding a 1-over par 865 (286-283-296), its worst finish at the championship event since finishing fifth in 2007 and 2008.

The Flames' fifth-place finish left the team out of the NCAA Regional field for the first time since 2010. Liberty captured the Big South title and automatic bid to the NCAA Regionals in 2011, 2012 and 2014 and was an at-large selection to the regional field in 2013.

Three members of Flames' Head Golf Coach Jeff Thomas' starting line-up for next week's event gained their first look at the Davis Love, III, designed golf course last year.

Isaiah Logue, last year's Big South Men's Golf Freshman of the Year, finished the event tied for seventh place following a 4-under par 212 (71-69-72).

Payton Taylor finished tied for 18th place with a 2-over par 218 (73-72-73), while Hutson Chandler finished in 41st place with a 13-over par 229 (73-77-79).

Logue, a seasoned veteran on Liberty's squad as a sophomore, currently leads the Flames and ranks fourth in the Big South with a 72.42 season stroke average. He has posted four top 10 finishes and has carded 11 rounds at par or better this year.

Fellow sophomore Mickey DeMorat will be making his first trip to Ninety Six, S.C., after transferring during the offseason from Eastern Florida State. He ranks second on the team and sixth in the Big South (72.68 season stroke average) thanks in part to his strong play during the spring where he led the team with a 71.95 stroke average.

Taylor has posted three top 10 finishes this year and ranks third on the team with a 74.32 season stroke average. His strongest finish of the spring was a ninth-place showing at the Southern Intercollegiate Championships where he carded a 2-under par 142 (70-72).

Chandler (75.00) and freshman Gabe Lench (74.69) will round out Liberty's line-up at next week's conference championship event.

Hole-by-hole live scoring will be available throughout the event via Golfstat. @LUGameDay (Liberty's Game Day Twitter account) will be on the course providing more in-depth coverage of Liberty's golfers as they seek to capture the program's fourth conference title.
