For the second time this season, Liberty freshman Eddie Gutierrez has been named Big South Men's Tennis Freshman of the Week. Gutierrez captured the award for contests played from March 14-20. The Mexico native also garnered the award on Feb. 24.
Gutierrez posted a 2-0 record this weekend as Liberty defeated East Carolina on Sunday, 4-2. Gutierrez paired with Alex Poynter from the No. 3 doubles position, defeating Ronny Georgi and Kasey Countee, 6-4. Gutierrez and Poynter's victory clinched the doubles point for Liberty, taking the early 1-0 advantage. After the Pirates knotted the contest at one apiece, Gutierrez delivered the straight-set victory that placed Liberty back on top for good. The Mexico native defeated Georgi, 6-2, 6-1 to give the Flames a 2-1 advantage, a lead they would not relinquish.
Gutierrez also aided the Flames in defeating Winthrop yesterday, 5-2, at the Cook Tennis Center. Gutierrez and Poynter clinched the doubles point for the second consecutive match, besting Michael Chen and Aditya Gokhale, 7-6(2). Gutierrez carried the momentum into singles play, defeating Steven Patrick in straight sets, 6-3, 6-3 to place the Flames back on top for good.
Gutierrez and Liberty return to action tomorrow with a conference bout against Presbyterian at 1 p.m. The contest will be played in Clinton, S.C., pitting the conference's No. 2 team in the Blue Hose versus the No. 3 Flames.
