For the second consecutive week, a Liberty men's tennis player has won Big South Men's Tennis Freshman of the Week honors. This week it comes from Mexico native Eddie Gutierrez. The standout freshman received the award for matches played between Feb. 15-21.
Gutierrez finished the week with a 3-2 record, with one of the two losses coming on Saturday against No. 25 Florida State. In Friday's 5-2 loss to Florida A&M in Tallahassee, Fla., Gutierrez collected one of Liberty's two singles victories. The Mexico native bested Jalen Evans in the No. 5 singles spot in straight sets, 6-0, 6-3. Gutierrez suffered one loss on Saturday against the No. 25 Seminoles but then rebounded on Sunday, picking up two victories against The Citadel. The Liberty freshman paired up with fellow freshman Alex Poynter to defeat The Citadel's Matthew Henson and Michael Anzalone by a score of 6-4 in the No. 2 doubles position. Gutierrez then defeated Jackson Pride in the No. 4 singles slot, 6-3, 6-4.
The Flames return to action on March 2 when they open Big South action against in-state foe Longwood. The contest will be played in Farmville, Va., at 2 p.m.
