Lady Flames Set for Home Opener

The Liberty Lady Flames lacrosse team will host VCU in a mid-week contest, tomorrow at 4 p.m., at the Liberty Lacrosse Field. The non-conference match will serve as the home opener for Liberty.

Live video, provided by the Big South Network, will be available by clicking on the appropriate link on the lacrosse schedule/results panel. Last Time Out
The Lady Flames fell to Richmond on Saturday by a final score of 16-11 in Richmond, Va. Liberty claimed the early 2-0 advantage thanks to goals by Callie Francis and Michaela Rich. However, the Spiders' offense proved too much for the Lady Flames as Liberty yielded 16 goals on 44 shots. Katherine Widrick and Aubrie Tarris accounted for 18 saves as the combination of freshmen goalkeepers split time in Saturday's contest. Kayla Foster collected her second consecutive three-point performance to open the season. Foster notched two goals and dished out one assist. Francis led the team in goals during Saturday's non-conference loss. The redshirt senior recorded the first hat trick of the season by a Lady Flame, capitalizing on each of her three shots taken. The defense was led by captain Colleen Ekert who scooped up five ground balls and forced three turnovers during the event.

What to watch for: Liberty

  • The newcomers have stepped up in a big way for Liberty, accounting for nine goals, three assists, 12 points and 12 groundballs.
  • Katy Pridemore saw action in her first contest of the season on Saturday, dishing out two assists, after being sidelined in the season opener on Feb. 13.
  • The Lady Flames return a strong core at defense in Colleen Ekert, Meghan Hammond and Lindsey McNamara who helped Liberty rank ninth in the NCAA in caused turnovers per game (10.00) and seventh in ground balls per game (19.00).
  • Widrick and Tarris have accounted for a combined 28 saves on 68 shots faced thru the first two contests.

Scouting the Rams

  • VCU enters tomorrow's contest having split its first two games of the inaugural season.
  • The Rams roster consists of 23 student-athletes, including 22 freshmen.
  • Molly Barcikowski leads the way for VCU on the offensive end, recording seven goals and four assists for a points total of 11 thru the first two games.
  • VCU collected 21 goals in its first game of the season, defeating Gardner-Webb by a score of 21-9 on Feb. 14. However, the Rams yielded 20 goals to UMBC in a 20-5 loss on Saturday.

What's Next?
Following tomorrow's in-state bout, the Lady Flames will return to action on Saturday when they travel to Annapolis, Md., to square off against Navy at noon. The contest will be played at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium.
