Lady Flames Travel to Richmond, Saturday

The Liberty Lady Flames lacrosse team travels to Richmond, Va., on Saturday for an in-state contest against the Richmond Spiders. The match will begin at 1 p.m. and will be played at Robins Stadium.

2016 Lady Flames
The Lady Flames dropped their season opener on Saturday, falling to Virginia Tech by a score of 7-4 in Blacksburg, Va. Liberty was without 2015 leading scorer, Katy Pridemore. The Lady Flames saw several bright spots in the performance, despite the loss. Freshman goalkeeper Katherine Widrick collected 10 saves on 24 shots faced and held Virginia Tech to its second lowest scoring output of the season with seven goals. In addition, freshman attacker Kayla Foster notched one goal and dished out two assists to lead the Lady Flames with three points. Junior defender Victoria Tickle garnered the Big South Defensive Player of the Week honor for her performance in which she caused a team-best five turnovers and scooped up a team-high three ground balls.

What to watch for: Liberty

  • The freshman class stepped up in a big way on Saturday, notching three of Liberty's four goals and collecting two of the team's three assists.
  • Liberty's attacking unit has seen new faces in the 2016 roster, replacing the 2015 squad that finished 18th in the NCAA in goals per game with 12.85.
  • The four Liberty captains made a strong impact in the season opener, combining for one goal and 10 ground balls in the season opener.
  • The Lady Flames return a strong core at defense in Colleen Ekert, Meghan Hammond and Lindsey McNamara who helped Liberty rank ninth in the NCAA in caused turnovers per game (10.00) and seventh in ground balls per game (19.00).
  • Katherine Widrick notched 10 saves on 24 shots faced, playing all 60 minutes of Saturday's loss.

Scouting the Spiders

  • Richmond's 25-player roster consists of only nine upperclassmen.
  • The Spiders caged Mercer in their season opener by a score of 16-2 at Robins Stadium.
  • Mia Castagnero netted five goals and collected one assist, while Kim Egizi notched three goals and handed out three assists in Saturday's victory.
  • Richmond goalies, Michaela Aymong and Danni Leserve, split time in Saturday's victory with Aymong picking up the win on two goals allowed and two saves.

Series History
The Lady Flames are 0-2 all-time against the Spiders. In the most recent matchup, Richmond bested Liberty by a score of 13-10 on Feb. 28, 2015 at Liberty Lacrosse Field.

What's Next?
Following Saturday's contest, the Lady Flames will return to action on Wednesday when they welcome VCU to the Hill City for Liberty's home opener. The contest will be played at the Liberty Lacrosse Field and will begin at 4 p.m.
