Alexia Taylor was named Big South Softball Player of the Week on Monday.
Liberty sophomore catcher Alexia Taylor has been named Big South Softball Player of the Week, for her efforts during the first week of the 2016 season.
Taylor, hailing from Oviedo, Fla., was the 2015 Big South Freshman of the Year, while earning a spot on the Big South All-Conference second team. This is her first Player of the Week honor. She is the first Lady Flame since Jamie Crisp on April 28, 2014 to be named Big South Softball Player of the Week
During the opening week, Taylor hit safely in all six games, batting .400 with two doubles and six runs scored while playing in her home state of Florida. She opened the weekend by going 1-for-3 at No. 17/17 UCF. She then went 1-for-3 with a double and scored Liberty's lone run against Chattanooga. Taylor batted 2-for-3 against Bethune-Cookman on Friday.
She hit 1-for-5 with two runs scored in an 11-1 win over Morgan State on Saturday, and then went 2-for-3 with a double and a career-high three runs scored in an 8-0 win over Stetson. She finished out the week with a 1-for-3 outing versus No. 5/5 Alabama.
Taylor is the first Lady Flame to post a six-game hitting streak to start a season since 2005, when Jessica Moore had hits in each of her first eight games.
The Lady Flames (2-4) next head to Waco, Texas, where they will compete in the Getterman Classic. On Friday, Liberty is scheduled to face North Texas at 1:30 p.m. before meeting No. 16/18 Baylor at 6:30 p.m.
