Lacrosse Ready for Season Opener in Blacksburg

The Liberty Lady Flames lacrosse squad kicks off its regular season on Saturday in Blacksburg, Va., against the Hokies of Virginia Tech. The contest will begin at 5 p.m., and will be played at the Indoor Practice Facility.

2016 Lady Flames
The Lady Flames boast eight returning starters and have 22 letterwinners back from last year's team that recorded a program-best 9-11 record, including a Liberty-best 5-2 conference mark. With three of the top six scorers from 2015 back this spring, head coach Kelly Nangle and the Lady Flames are seeking their second consecutive Big South championship game appearance. Liberty welcomes nine new members to the 2016 squad, including redshirt senior transfer Callie Francis.

What to watch for: Liberty

  • The Lady Flames shattered 36 program records in 2015, ranging from individual to season records.
  • Katy Pridemore is coming off a record-setting freshman season in which she netted 52 goals and recorded 68 points.
  • Liberty's attacking unit will see new faces in the 2016 roster, replacing the 2015 squad that finished 18th in the NCAA in goals per game with 12.85.
  • Three of the four captains (Kallie Britton, Colleen Ekert, Meghan Hammond) accounted for 33 goals, 17 assists, 102 groundballs, 62 draw controls and 68 caused turnovers in 2015.
  • The Lady Flames return a strong core at defense in Colleen Ekert, Meghan Hammond and Lindsey McNamara who helped Liberty rank ninth in the NCAA in caused turnovers per game (10.00) and seventh in ground balls per game (19.00).
  • Liberty's goalies for the season will be Aubrie Tarris and Katherine Widrick, both freshmen having to replace Juliann Elmer.

Scouting the Hokies

  • The Hokies return six starters from the 2015 season, including junior goalkeeper Meagh Graham
  • Virginia Tech enters Saturday's contest with a 2-1 overall record, having most recently beaten Davidson yesterday by a score of 9-8 in Davidson, N.C.
  • The Hokies are averaging 11 goals per game, giving up just seven per game on the defensive end.
  • Tristan McGinley, sister of former Liberty assistant coach Annie McGinley, paces the offense with seven goals and four assists.

The Lady Flames are 0-5 all-time against Virginia Tech, dropping the most recent outing by a score of 15-11 on Feb. 6, 2015, in Lynchburg, Va.

What's Next
Following Saturday's contest, the Lady Flames return to action on Feb. 20 against Richmond. Liberty will take on the Spiders at 1 p.m. at Robins Stadium in Richmond, Va.
