With the field hockey team's spring practices around the corner, LibertyFlames.com concludes its player spotlight feature with this week's student-athlete, Rachel Suter.
Suter is a sophomore midfielder from Millersville, Pa. Suter competed in the first six contests of the 2015 before being sidelined due to a knee injury. The Pennsylvania native accounted for one goal and one assist in those six contests.
Who introduced you to field hockey? Suter: When I was younger, I was always attending my older sister's hockey games. After a while I decided to play myself and grew to love the game.
Tell me about your family. What do your parents, or guardians, do? How many brothers or sisters do you have and what do they do? Suter: My dad works at Turkey Hill Dairy where he is a distribution supervisor. My mom drives school buses for the school district of Lancaster. My older sister Renee played field hockey at the University of Massachusetts and recently graduated in 2015. She is currently a teacher's aid at Manheim Township High School and she is also the head coach of their high school varsity team.
If you weren't playing field hockey which sport would you enjoy playing? Suter: If I weren't playing field hockey I would probably be playing soccer or basketball. I really enjoyed playing both of those sports before I decided to focus solely on field hockey.
Tell us your recruiting story on how you got to Liberty. Suter: After attending many showcases, Coach Murphy invited me to visit the campus and meet the team. I had already heard great things about the campus and program from past high school and college teammate Helen Doolittle and I was excited to see what they had to offer. After my second visit I knew that this was the best fit for me athletically, academically, and spiritually. I committed to Liberty in February of my junior year.
If you could get away from field hockey for a little bit, what would you enjoy doing? Suter: If I could get away from field hockey a little bit I would definitely spend more time at the beach. Every summer since I can remember, my family has attended "family beach week" with my church. At a very young age I learned to love the beach and look forward to going ever year.
What are you studying, and what do you enjoy about that? Suter: I am studying family and consumer science (FACS). I enjoy learning about handling diverse family lives. I also really enjoy my cooking, sewing, and general FACS classes.
Who were your heroes growing up, and who did you emulate in the backyard or playground? Suter: When I was younger I looked up to Mia Hamm. She was always a class act and a great role model. I would say that my heroes would be my mom and dad. They have shown my sister and me what hard work looks like. They continually encourage me to be the best I can and I always know they are supporting me 100%.
What do you look forward to most this spring? Suter: This spring I look forward to getting my knee stronger and being back on the field as soon as possible!
