Prior to the Flames leaving for their first tournament of the spring semester, LFSN reporter Nick Pierce had a chance to talk with Flames' sophomore Mickey DeMorat.
DeMorat will be one of six golfers competing for the Flames at next week's Sea Best Invitational in Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla., at the TPS Sawgrass – Dye Course. The two-day, 54-hole event gets underway with 36 holes of action on Monday, followed by a final round on Tuesday.
During his first semester with the Flames, DeMorat finished the fall with a 73.83 stroke average, the second-best mark on the team. He competed in all four of Liberty's events, posting three top 20 finishes.
His best showing of the fall was at the Rees Jones Invitational, where he finished tied for fourth place with a 2-over par 218 (72-74-72). DeMorat's solid play helped the Flames claim the team title by 21 strokes in the 10-team tournament.
DeMorat transferred to Liberty this summer following an All-America season as a freshman at Eastern Florida State College. He finished the year as the No. 2 ranked NJCAA player in the country, as ranked by GolfStat, plus helped Eastern Florida State finish the year as the national runner-up at the NJCAA National Championship.
