The Liberty men's indoor track & field team won its 18th straight Big South title in 2015.
The Liberty men's indoor track & field team was picked to win its 19th consecutive Big South Conference title, as voted upon by the league's head coaches. Meanwhile, the Lady Flames were voted second behind Coastal Carolina.
Head Coach Brant Tolsma's men's squad has captured all 18 team titles in the history of the Big South Indoor Track & Field Championships, marking the longest active conference championship streak in NCAA Division I men's track & field. This year's team received six of the seven first-place votes and 48 total points for the No. 1 spot in the poll.
The Flames return three conference champions from 2015, including Aklesso Agama (long jump and triple jump), Stephen Racanelli (200 and 400) and David Scouten (weight throw). Additionally, 2014 Big South indoor men's shot put champion Fred Fulton is back after redshirting the 2015 indoor campaign.
Campbell, which has placed second at each of the last two Big South Indoor Track & Field Championships, garnered the other first-place votes and 42 total points for second place in the voting.
High Point (third place, 36 points), Charleston Southern (tied for fourth, 21), Gardner-Webb (tied for fourth, 21), Winthrop (sixth, 20) and UNC Asheville (seventh, 8) round out the men's poll.
On the women's side, Coastal Carolina is favored to win its fourth consecutive championship at this meet. The Chanticleers garnered seven out of nine first-place votes and 79 total points.
The Lady Flames claimed a pair of first-place votes and 74 points for second place in the poll. They have finished as the runner-up at this meet for three straight seasons, following a run of three consecutive Big South indoor titles (2010, 2011 & 2012).
Liberty's 2015-16 women's squad features Ednah Kurgat, who captured the Big South indoor women's 3K title a year ago and is coming off of an All-America cross country campaign. Three-time Big South indoor women's shot put champion Mychelle Cumings also returns, following a redshirt season in 2014-15.
High Point was voted third with 59 points, followed by Campbell (fourth, 50) and Radford (fifth, 42).
Charleston Southern (sixth, 33), Gardner-Webb (seventh, 30), Winthrop (eighth, 24) and UNC Asheville (ninth, 14) wrap up the women's poll.
The Lady Flames officially opened the 2015-16 indoor season on Dec. 3-4 at the Liberty Kickoff at the Tolsma Indoor Track Center. Liberty will begin its men's season at the Hokie Invitational, slated for Jan. 22-23 in Blacksburg, Va.
The 2016 Big South Indoor Track & Field Championships will return to Virginia Tech's Rector Field House in Blacksburg, Va., for the 11th time in meet history. The meet is slated for Feb. 26-27.
