The Liberty Lady Flames tennis squad competed in day two of the Wild West Open on the campus of North Texas in Denton, Texas.
On the day, the Lady Flames finished 3-5 overall with two singles victories and one doubles win.
The two singles victories came from Maria Khval and Emily Groeneveld, both advancing the singles finals of their respective brackets. Khval gained passage to the Flight A Singles final after besting teammate, Evangeline Crist in straight sets, 6-1, 6-4. The junior will take on Sofiko Kadzhaya of No. 17 TCU in the final tomorrow. Kadzhaya has notched two consecutive victories over Lady Flames en route to the finals match and setting up a third consecutive matchup with a Liberty player.
Groeneveld collected a three-set victory over Kamilla Galieva en route to her appearance in the Flight B Singles final. The junior claimed the first set, 7-6(4) before stumbling in the second set by a score of 6-2. Groeneveld then bounced back and cruised past Galieva in the third set, 6-1. Similar to Kadzhaya, Groeneveld has beaten two consecutive North Texas opponents en route to the final appearance. The Liberty junior will take on Nastya Shestakova of North Texas in the Flight B Singles final following doubles play tomorrow.
Three Liberty doubles tandems fell in the quarterfinals of the doubles draw but the duo of Belen Rivera and Groeneveld notched a back draw victory over Luisa Varon and Miranda Rodriguez to advance to the consolation bracket final tomorrow morning.
