The Liberty men's tennis squad will conclude fall competition this weekend in Winston-Salem, N.C., competing in the Wake Forest Invitational.
The tournament field for the Wake Forest Invitational includes ACC opponents Duke, Virginia, Virginia Tech, NC State and host Wake Forest. Kentucky and Indiana also add to the 18-team field for the weekend. Liberty is the lone Big South team in the field of 18.
This weekend's tournament will be the fourth consecutive season that the Flames have competed in the Wake Forest Invitational.
Last season, Liberty finished the tournament with a 20-21 overall record including a 17-13 mark in singles play. The Flames recorded six top-five finishes in 12 brackets throughout the tournament. Sam Matheson highlighted the returning players with a third-place finish in the B1 Singles Flight. Jason Burgess and former teammate Josiah Boda displayed a strong performance in doubles action, finishing second in the D Doubles Flight.
Most recently, the Flames competed in the ITA Atlantic Regional in Blacksburg, Va., on Oct. 16-18. Matheson and Egon Samaai highlighted singles play for the Flames with both reaching the round of 32. However, Matheson and Samaai each fell in the round of 32 in straight sets, ending their runs at the regional tournament.
Following this weekend's tournament, the Flames will return to action in the spring season on Jan. 22 with a home doubleheader at the Sports Racket against James Madison at 11 a.m. and Morehead State at 6 p.m.
